Chicago Med has given us countless beloved characters over the years. The writing and the acting has always been the bread-and-butter of this show, and care has been taken with regard to keeping the storylines of each character intact. This is partially why someone as fondly remembered as April Sexton will not be returning to the show anytime soon.
Yaya DaCosta, the actress who plays Sexton, recently spoke about her feelings toward Chicago Med, and while she was effusive in her praise for the show and the impact it had on her career, she said she had no interest in returning. Why? Well, because she feels her character left at the perfect time. She's not interested in potentially undoing the resolution she loved so much.
Yaya DaCosta wants to preserve her character

"I don’t foresee her returning to the show," DaCosta told TV Insider. "I really love that ending. I think it did feel like an ending." The actress did not feel this way the first time she left Chicago Med, which is partially why she agreed to return for a handful of episodes in season 8. DaCosta believed there was more to her character than had been communicated when she was initially written off, and jumped at the opportunity to give Sexton a happy ending.
"I think when I left the first time, there wasn’t any effort put into nicely tying up the storyline," she asserted. "So, when Dr. [Ethan] Choi left, it was a great opportunity for me to come back for a few episodes, get married to him, and go off into the sunset on our mission."
She loves the way April Sexton's story ended

As much as would love to see Sexton (and Choi) return to Gaffney Medical Center, we can appreciate DaCosta's stance. Especially since she felt as though she had been let down by writers previously. A gigantic mid-season wedding is about as good as it gets in the often tragic world of Chicago Med, so the notion of preserving that moment makes sense. We've seen actors like Nick Gehlfuss and Torrey DeVitto do the same thing once their characters earned happy endings.
DaCosta made it clear, however, that she looks upon her time as April Sexton fondly. "It warms my heart so much to know that even in an ensemble cast where every character was significant that people still felt the impact of April Sexton," she noted. "And still feel her absence even though the show continues. It moves me." It moves us, too.
