Could another doctor be about to follow Dr. Naomi Howard out the door and leave Gaffney at the beginning of Chicago Med season 12? Well, that’s the million-dollar question weighing heavily on our minds courtesy of Chicago Med’s showrunner Allen MacDonald.
When Chicago Med season 12 begins, fans will be met with a three-month time jump. During those three months, Hannah will have had the chance to spend some time away from the hospital for her maternity leave. While Hannah and Dean have been cohabiting since Mabel’s birth, MacDonald revealed to TVLine that the pair will still be trying to figure out their new dynamic, with Hannah still not having told Dean “I love you” back.
As the season begins, Archer will already have returned to work after taking time off following Mabel’s birth, but Hannah will still be on maternity leave. MacDonald confirmed that Hannah will drop by for a visit at the ED in the season 12 premiere, but he cast doubt on whether Hannah will actually return to work, hinting that perhaps Hannah might struggle to return to work and consider stepping away from her medical duties.
But is there really cause for concern? While MacDonald seems to want to build some concern over whether Hannah will return, we’re not buying it this time.
Fans might recall that MacDonald took every opportunity last season to make us worry that Hannah might not deliver the baby, dropping hints throughout the season that had us worrying Hannah could lose the baby or die giving birth. In the end, everything was fine, and Hannah delivered a healthy baby girl, making all of our worrying throughout the season for nothing.
MacDonald hinting that Hannah might not return to her medical duties following Mabel’s birth seems to be another instance of a brilliant showrunner looking to keep fans guessing, but social media seems to have already proven there is nothing to worry about.
We’ve seen several videos posted to the One Chicago social media platforms that feature Jessy Schram on set donning scrubs. If Hannah wasn’t set to return to her medical duties and opted to remain home, extending her leave, we would expect not to see Schram donning scrubs on set during at least those early weeks when filming was taking place on the first several episodes of the season.
While Hannah might not be back from leave in the premiere, we expect her visit will make her eager to return to work and that we’ll see Hannah back at Gaffney beginning in the second episode of Chicago Med season 12. What will be interesting is to see how Hannah struggles being a new mom with her responsibilities at the hospital.
It's going to be exciting to see how Hannah and Dean both adjust to their new reality as co-parents, and we're really eager to see how being a mom might change the way she approaches medicine as an OB-GYN. We're sure it's going to be something the writers will explore through the season, and we'll find out if and how when season 12 begins on October 7 at 8/7c.
