Following the Chicago Med season 12 premiere, showrunner Allen MacDonald made it clear that there were some shakeups coming to the show, particularly in the nursing department.
“There are several shakeups coming. I wouldn’t specify which nurses, though,” MacDonald told People when asked about the potential repercussions that could be coming after Doris revealed she was the one who leaked Theo’s medical records to the board. The revelation sent shockwaves through the fandom as no one saw that twist coming, and it immediately left fans wondering whether Doris was in jeopardy of leaving.
With the promise of shakeups coming from MacDonald, Doris seemed like the character at the most risk; however, the first shakeup to occur had nothing to do with one of Gaffney’s current nurses. Instead, it was Sharon Goodwin who ended up undergoing what is about to be one of the biggest role changes in the show’s history.
In the closing moments of Chicago Med season 12, episode 2, Goodwin decided to accept Miranda’s offer and then turned around and accepted a new position at Gaffney: Dr. Dean Archer’s new charge nurse for the ED overhaul. The moment threw fans a major curveball, as the assumption had been that Goodwin would remain on the sidelines during this battle to clear her name or that we’d see the conflict resolved in a swift manner, allowing Goodwin to return to her position as Executive Director of Patient and Medical Services.
Instead, Goodwin took the deal to protect Doris and then accepted the charge nurse job at Gaffney as part of a bigger plan.
“I don’t think the changes that Miranda’s making are just about budget cuts. I think there’s a bigger plan here, but I can’t fight it from the outside. I need access. I promise you this is not over,” Goodwin assured Doris.
As Goodwin prepares to enact this new plan, we’re about to get to see her in a role that we’ve never seen before, which is honestly quite exciting. While we will be counting down the days until Goodwin is back in the driver’s seat at Gaffney in her old role, we’re really excited to get to see her working down in the ED alongside Dean and the other doctors and nurses as a charge nurse.
Yes, this shakeup is part of a bigger plan, and we expect that Goodwin will look to use her charge nurse job to gather intel needed to figure out what Miranda is up to and put an end to it. However, in order for her to keep this job and keep her cover, Goodwin is going to have to get her hands dirty, which is sure to create some really fun storytelling opportunities.
It’s going to be fun to see how Goodwin’s status as a charge nurse will impact her relationships and how the various nurses and doctors will take to working alongside Goodwin in the ED. It brings a new shift in power dynamics as Goodwin is no longer going to be the one in charge and making the difficult decisions, and we’re sure there will be some conflict along the way as she struggles to settle into this new role.
We’re also looking forward to seeing her actively working medical cases and interacting with patients. Sure, Goodwin has scrubbed in from time to time in hours of need, but we’ve never gotten to really see her in action as a nurse, and that’s something that will be really fun to explore. As for how long this will last? There’s no telling what the writers have planned, but it’s clear that they’re looking to shake things up and MacDonald is following through on his promise to do so.
Chicago Med airs Wednesdays at 8/7c on NBC.
