Chicago Med just confirmed a major character was going to be fired from Gaffney

It seems one member of the Chicago Med team's time at Gaffney nearly came to an end as they were set to be fired early this season.

It turns out that Gaffney Chicago Medical Center nearly bid farewell to a key member of its staff this season on Chicago Med.

Chicago Med season 11, episode 19 revisited a key storyline from earlier this season when Gaffney board member Miranda Lewis gifted both Naomi and Goodwin with expensive Cartier watches. The gesture was one from a place of good intention, as Miranda wanted to find a way to express her gratitude to the pair for saving her life earlier this season, and expensive gift-giving is the best way she knows how to.

The gesture was nice, but it left both Naomi and Goodwin feeling uncomfortable. Goodwin arranged to meet with Miranda and returned the watches, thanking her for the gesture and informing her that they were just too much for them to accept. Miranda tried to explain that she was trying to show her gratitude and asked how she could do that if not via gifts, to which Goodwin remarked that a simple thank you would do the trick.

Miranda confessed that saying thank you doesn’t come easy, as she doesn’t like being indebted to people, to which Goodwin pointed out that she’s in no way indebted to them at all. They saved her life because that’s what they’re trained to do, as she assured her that she would never have held this over her head.

“I know it’s cynical, but I’ve seen it a million times,” Miranda confessed before confirming that her intentions were to fire Goodwin that day she ended up saving her life. “I was going to fire you that day.”

The confession confirmed the suspicion we had that Goodwin’s job at Gaffney was very much on the line earlier this season, and she nearly lost her job with Miranda planning on pushing for her to be fired. While Goodwin did not leverage the events of that day in which she helped to save Miranda’s life while on a private jet on the way to a board meeting, her actions that day ultimately did save her job.

We honestly can’t imagine Gaffney without Goodwin at the helm of the ship, and it is wild to know that her job was on the line. While Goodwin would never leverage someone’s life for her own personal gain, we’re glad that the universe intervened and helped to show Miranda just how incredible Goodwin is.

We’ve seen that Miranda hasn’t been afraid to still push back when she disagrees with Goodwin and that the hatchet hasn’t been fully buried between the two. Still, we hope that the moment at least proved to Miranda that Goodwin is a valuable asset to the Gaffney team and made her realize that while she does not need to be indebted to her, she doesn’t need to be leading a charge to have Goodwin removed from her position.

Shows need conflict, and we imagine Miranda and Goodwin will certainly be at odds in the episodes ahead knowing that Theo is coming for Charles' job, and we welcome the back-and-forth between the two characters. After all, you need a bit of conflict to keep things interesting in a show. We just hope that the conflict doesn't come in the form of Miranda trying to push Goodwin out the door again.
