The One Chicago franchise has never been afraid to lean into rivalries. In fact, the universe began fully centered on one with Casey and Severide's epic rivalry in the beginning of Chicago Fire. Over the years, there have been plenty of heads butting together across the three series, and in the latest episode of Chicago Med, a rivalry we didn't see coming was born.

Chicago Med season 12 episode 4 made some big professional moves for two main characters, as Ripley was named Archer's replacement as interim ED chief and Frost pursued potential opportunities that would put him in a good position to eventually rise through the ranks to become an attending. But the road to making his role change happen just got trickier.

After Ripley suggested to Frost that he should pursue the chief resident position in order to make himself look even better as contender for attending, Frost found himself unexpectedly in competition with Dr. Wu. While the pair worked together on a pediatrics case, Wu actively dissuaded Frost from applying for chief resident to reduce her competition. But he outsmarted her.

Frost and Wu are competing for chief resident in Chicago Med season 12

Wu had fed Frost the cons of the chief resident position, scaring him off the heightened responsibilities and paperwork that comes with the job. Upon hearing these words from Wu, he doubts himself and changes his mind on delivering his application to Dr. Hart. Thankfully, he later came to his senses after overhearing Wu manipulated him into bowing out.

Frost basically hears Dr. Hart give the chief resident role to Wu since there were no other applicants with Frost pocketing his application. But he overheard this conversation right in time to give Hart his application before the end of the day. Right in the nick of time (Frost's sitcom pun not intended), Wu's trickery didn't work and Frost decided to believe in himself rather than backing down out of fear.

But Wu's attempt to sabotage Frost for her own gain has ignited a new rivalry at Gaffney, and with Goodwin and Archer leading the charge against Miranda and Sloan, rivalries are going around in Chicago Med season 12. Frost and Wu competing for chief resident will surely prove to be the most tense rivalry in the ED, especially since Wu hasn't been making many friends.

Since arriving in the season 12 premiere, Wu has clashed with almost every member of the emergency department staff. She and Ripley weren't fast friends when they worked together and Wu defied patient care orders from him. Now that she played dirty to secure a chief resident role, she's not likely to have the core group of doctors warming up to her.

Chicago Med has been successful in writing Wu as a foil to the core ED team, testing them and pushing the boundaries with her matter-of-fact demeanor. She's a fun character to watch, and she's an even more fun character to root against when she's clashing with our seasoned favorites. Wu made a gutsy move with Frost, and it's an ambition you almost have to respect.

Frost and Wu's battle for chief resident is just getting started, and there are sure to be plenty of twists and turns before we find out who gets the job. We'll have to see what the future holds for Wu at Gaffney if she doesn't ultimately snag the role. Will she continue to stick around and earn back the trust of her coworkers? That's the biggest question on our minds right now.
