Following last week’s three-part One Chicago crossover event, Chicago Med returned to its normal pacing in episode 14, “Twist & Shout,” with an episode that brought about some amazing guest performers connected to the episode’s many storylines.
Returning after their brief introduction a few episodes back are David Costabile and Tamlyn Tomita as James and Celeste Frost, the estranged parents of Darren Barnet’s character, John Frost. The duo first appeared in episode 12 when they came to town hoping to mend fences with their son. It seems after first turning them away, John will have a change of heart and decide to meet with his parents in the episode.
Given their status as recurring guest characters, NBC tapped a notable pair of stars to play the roles, as both Costabile and Tomita are no strangers to film and television.
Suits fans will recognize Costabile for his role as Daniel Hardman in the hit USA Network drama, a role he’d reprise in a guest spot on the ill-fated NBC spinoff, Suits LA. Others might recognize him for his role as Gale Boetticher on Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul or for his role as Mike Warner in Billions. Of course, viewers might also recognize him from some of his many guest spots on hit series that include Interview with the Vampire, FBI: International, The Good Wife, Person of Interest, Unforgettable, Law & Order, and Law & Order: SVU.
As for Tomita, the actress behind Frost’s mom on Chicago Med has appeared in countless titles over the years, including The Karate Kid franchise. Tomita played Kumiko in The Karate Kid Part II and later reprised the role in Netflix’s hit series Cobra Kai. Chicago Med isn’t the first time she’s played the mother to a key character, as she also starred as Noshiko Yukimura on Teen Wolf, the mother of Arden Cho’s character, Kira. Tomita has also appeared in hit shows and movies including The Day After Tomorrow, The Eye, Dead Boy Detectives, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, Blue Eye Samurai, and Avatar: The Last Airbender.
Also guest-starring in Chicago Med season 11, episode 14, are Aleksa Palladino and Jeff Adler as Maddie and Grant Thomas. Maddie is a young woman who comes into the Gaffney ED seeking treatment amid a difficult divorce.
Palladino is best known for her work as Angela Darmody on Boardwalk Empire and for playing Sara Wheeler on Halt and Catch Fire. Fans might also recognize her from some of her many guest spots on shows such as The Penguin, One Dollar, Rogue, and Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Meanwhile, Chicago Med viewers might recognize Adler for playing Joey Romano in Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere and his work in series that include Hightown, Modern Family, The Night Agent, FBI, and Law & Order: SVU.
We’ve also got Justin Mortelliti and Paul Culos playing Glenn Hoffman and Tim Freitag, a pair of friends who are injured during St. Patrick's Day celebrations and treated by Archer and Lenox. The duo have guest-starred on a number of hit shows, which is why you might find yourself trying to place them when watching the episode.
Mortelliti has appeared in hits that include FBI, Law & Order: Organized Crime, NCIS: New Orleans, and TURN: Washington’s Spies. Culos, meanwhile, has appeared in Abbott Elementary, Monster, The Neighborhood, Party Down, Hacks, Minx, and more.
Rounding out the guest cast is Jenelle Chu as Paige Matthews. Chu has made a career of guest roles on hit shows that include Prodigal Son, New Amsterdam, Madam Secretary, and Elementary.
