Chicago Med's episode 18 wound up introducing a character we thought would only ever be mentioned in name on the show.

Chicago Med’s creative team continues to find new ways to surprise the audience, and its latest episode brought about the debut of a character we honestly thought would only ever be mentioned on the show.

Earlier in season 11, the writers dropped a major bombshell on fans when it was revealed that Bert was not the biological father of his and Goodwin's oldest child, David. The shocking revelation came to light when Bert was on his deathbed, as we came to learn that David’s biological father was a man Goodwin had dated before meeting Bert.

As the secret came to light, it was revealed that David’s biological father cut off all communication with Goodwin upon learning she was pregnant. She later met Bert, who didn’t care that she was pregnant. They'd end up getting married and he raised David as his own child. When David was old enough to understand the circumstances, Bert and Goodwin told him the truth about his lineage, but David chose not to tell his two younger siblings for most of his life.

In episode 18, “Things Left Unsaid,” David made a surprise visit to see Goodwin while passing through town, and he came with some exciting news. He and his wife, Connie, were expecting their first child. After sharing the news with his mother, David expressed a desire to reach out to his biological father in hopes of getting his father’s medical history needed for genetic testing. Goodwin admitted that she hadn’t kept in touch with David’s father, but she did have an old address, which he could try to visit.

David would follow through on the lead and find that the address was correct, but his encounter with his biological father was not what he hoped for. While his father helped to provide him with the medical history information he was looking for, he made it clear to David that he did not want to ever be contacted again and wanted nothing to do with David.

We assumed that would be the end of the story; however, the writers took things a step further by officially introducing us to David’s biological father.

Late in the episode, David’s biological father came to visit Goodwin. We came to learn that David’s father was a man named Spencer Cook, and his debut certainly did not leave us wanting more of the character.

Spencer came to see Goodwin to make it clear to her that he did not appreciate the surprise visit, as he had made it quite clear that he never wanted to see David or Goodwin ever again.

"Let today be the last day I see either one of you. I already have a family,” Spencer coldly remarked before Goodwin made it clear she was grateful he didn’t want a family with her as she showed him to the door.

Needless to say, we certainly have no desire to see Spencer again on the show, as one encounter with David’s biological father was enough for our liking. He was a character we honestly didn’t think we’d ever meet, as it seemed like he’d be a character only ever referenced and never actually seen on the show. After meeting him, we definitely agree with Goodwin that she and David were better off without Spencer in their lives, and we’ll be better off if we never have to see the character again on Chicago Med!
