Chicago Med season 11 is nearly in the books, and the penultimate hour of the season certainly brings about some major developments that help to put the stories ahead and pave the way for the season finale on May 13.
Heading into episode 20, there were many storylines on our radar after episode 19 as it became clear the show would be building on four particular storylines: Charles trying to keep his job as Theo comes for it; Hannah preparing to give birth; Frost confronting his past and the role his dad played in the abuse he suffered as a child actor; and the fallout of Ripley finally learning the truth about Lenox's health.
As the episode opens, Dean and Sean out for a father-son babymoon in the form of a paintball excursion. Dean admits he’s ready and excited as Sean asks how Jennifer is handling things, and he reveals they broke up as she was convinced he has romantic feelings for Hannah. Sean laughs it off and questions why his dad just can’t bring himself to tell Hannah that he’s in love with her and encourages him to tell her now before it gets crazy.Â
At Med, Hannah is preparing Lovell to fill in as her leave approaches. As they’re speaking about Hannah’s delivery plans, Doris informs the pair that Will and Natalie have welcomed their little one. Lenox then notices things are icy between Lenox and Ripley as Hannah encourages Lovell to steer clear of the drama. Abrams comes to Lenox to inform him that there is a new clinical trial for GGS and encourages her to look into things as he steps away.
Arriving for the day, Charles is greeted by Goodwin, who pulls him aside to talk about Theo. Goodwin reveals that there’s a board meeting tonight, and it’s about Theo’s leadership role at Gaffney; he’s trying to oust Daniel and ready to do all he can. She tells Daniel they have 10 hours to make sure he doesn’t oust him at the board meeting.Â
Naomi and Frost are next to arrive and we hear Frost mentioning accompanying Naomi to an event. As she heads off to drop off her things, Ripley walks with Frost and points out how Frost has been staying at Naomi’s place a lot lately. Ripley asks how things are going, and he admits he doesn’t like not being around Naomi. She’s open, easy to talk to, and there are no games with her. Sadly he can’t relate as Ripley invites him to grab a beer after work.Â
Frost is pulled away to help a young man brought in after an altercation at juvie with a guard. Doris calls for Lenox as the fight between the pair led to a prison riot and a flood of patients is about to hit the ED. The ED quickly becomes a madhouse as prisoners are brought in for treatment and Goodwin quickly steps in to help manage things.Â
Doris assures Charles that everyone has his back as she hands off a psych consult that he quickly snagged from Theo. Meanwhile, Ripley helps tend to the head wound of a man who was about to be transferred to a new prison, fearing he has a skull fracture.Â
Maxwell, the young man brought in after the fight, needs surgery to remove his spleen, as Frost explains to him this is a life-threatening injury and internal bleeding could risk his life if they don't act fast. Maxwell doesn't want the surgery but knows they'll do whatever they want and tells him to do whatever after a brief outburst that nearly got a trigger-happy guard to jump in.
With the influx of patients, Dean is called in from his day off and tries to pull Hannah aside to speak. after his conversation with Sean. Unfortunately, she has to put the conversation off as she accompanies a patient upstairs for some tests.
Maxwell is about to be transferred to the OR, and Frost asks Dean if they’ve spoken about the surgery. He feels like the kid has been ignored and there is more to the story, but Dean suggests he’s just being gullible. Elsewhere, a patient with a leg injury is brought in, and Lenox is warned to watch him as they'd been warned about him having some rage issues. Abrams is brought in to check out Ripley’s patient who begins to herniate and needs to be rushed to the ER.Â
Hannah checks out Olivia and all seems to be fine. The baby stopped moving because she seems to be in the early stage of labor. While the baby is okay, the baby is breached, and they only have two options. Olivia wants to avoid a C-section. leaving Hannah to try option two.
Between treating patients, Theo approaches Charles and notes that he recognizes this is a bit awkward but that he respects him tremendously. Charles isn’t having any of it as he quips they don’t need to pretend, accusing him of stabbing him in the back.
Charles notes that he’s the first to admit he had some challenges before the stroke, but he’s back to himself and questions Theo's decision to make a play for his position. Theo remarks that he was asked to step up and he did, implementing theories that could help countless patients. Charles notes that the board cares about the bottom line as he questions whether Theo even cares about patients; that he’s so convinced machines can do their job is unsettling. Theo notes he came to Gaffney as he heard Charles was a genius, but he’s just like all the physiatrists that he’s battled since he was five years old who make bad assumptions based on intuition rather than actual facts.Â
As Lenox tells Doris they can open the ED back up now that most of the prisoners have been discharged, she overhears Ripley make a remark and snaps at him, thinking he was talking to her when he was just talking to Nancy about sorting out some storage carts.
After the scene, Lenox heads to check on the patient with the leg injury and asks him what he’s in prison for. He admits he’s in prison for murder and used to be like her, always in a hurry. He notes that he found something to live for in prison, but it’s a secret. Lenox finishes treating the leg and informs him they’re going to discharge him, but he seems to try to stall the process by telling her his foot is going numb, so she orders an MRI.Â
Up in his office, Goodwin comes to visit him. She came to see how he’s doing, and he admits that when they were arguing, Theo mentioned having difficulties with other physiatrists, which isn’t the first time. He wonders if there are some skeletons in his closet, and if he does, the board deserves to know. Goodwin encourages him to look into things as she heads out.Â
Hannah and Lovell work to try to rotate the baby manually but it’s proving to be difficult. They try an inversion that Maggie taught Hannah back in the day to see if that will do the trick. It seems to do the trick, they just need to confirm with an ultrasound and then she can deliver the baby naturally.Â
Frost has heard they’re going to add ten years to Maxwell’s sentence. He looked into his case and he ended up going to jail for felony murder just for being in the car when his friends robbed a house and killed two people. He tells Naomi something doesn’t add up and thinks that the guard was at fault, but he won’t speak up because he thinks he’s alone to which Naomi reminds him Maxwell is not as they’re in his corner.Â
Naomi steps away as Frost’s mom shows up and assures him that she didn’t know anything about Ainsley and would never have let it continue had she known. She notes that she always felt it was important to protect him from the life she had growing up, but she didn’t protect him at all. She then informs him that his dad is in hospice care as the treatments weren’t working and the doctors said there was nothing else they could do. She assures him she doesn’t want anything from him, she just wants him to know that he was right and that she’s so sorry it took her so long to realize that.Â
After getting Olivia settled, Lovell asks Hannah how long she’s been having contractions. Hannah explains she’s been having braxton hicks, but they’ve become more consistent. She’s in early labor, but Hannah doesn’t want anyone fussing over her as Lovell encourages her to just stop worrying about the future and focus on soaking in this moment.
Down in the ED, Doris gets a call from a Dr. Hogan, and Theo overhears Doris taking a message for Charles. He asks what he was calling about, and she encourages him to take it up with Charles as Lenox notes they all know what Theo is doing and that he’ll never be Charles. He replies that hopefully he can change her mind as he walks off and Lenox shifts her attention to her patient's scans.
While reviewing her patient’s scans, the results seem to indicate he stabbed himself. She begins to look for him but he’s nowhere to be found, informing Ripley to call security as finds the guard who was watching him injured. A code silver is called as Hannah is ordered to shelter in place with Olivia and her surrogate.Â
The hospital goes into lockdown as Goodwin informs Charles and Doris that the prison took the officer’s gun in the attack. CPD have arrived to help review footage and search for the missing prisoner.Â
Ripley and Lenox end up locked down together and Lenox quips that he doesn’t get to be mad about this. Was she a bitch to him the other night, sure, but she has a terminal illness. Their fling was supposed to be fun and meaningless, but he ruined it because now she can’t pretend she’s not sick and that she’s not in love with him.Â
Charles notes that there was noting in the package about his med school and all the studies focused on just one topics; antisocial personality disorder. That’s when Charles remembers Theo telling him about his misdiagnosis which got him thinking that this must have led to a brutal childhood for Theo. Charles notes he’s following his human intimation and it’s telling him that Theo would embrace technology after being let down by so many because those elements were what failed him. Charles notes that Theo was born with antisocial personality disorder, he was born a sociopath and thus why he had no issue coming for his job.Â
The baby is coming fast and Hannah I going to have to give birth in the room with help from Jacob. She assures her that she has this as Hannah’s water breaks.Â
