After suffering a panic attack and nosebleed in the previous episode of Chicago Med, Dr. Charles seeks treatment in hopes of getting some answers. The doctor he sees believes that his current antidepressants are not being processed by his body and suggests changing his medications to see if his symptoms abate. Dr. Charles isn’t sure of the plan and pushes back against the idea as he heads out to begin his day.

Dr. Charles is called in for a consult after a young man is brought into the ER after hitting another driver. The family lawyer suggests it was a suicide attempt and requests the young man be admitted on a psych hold, but Dr. Charles isn’t ready to jump to conclusions. Charles and Theo speak with the young man whose name we learn to be Sebastian.

Sebastian mentions that in high school things were good, but after his girlfriend broke up with him, he got depressed, his grades slipped, he quit lacrosse and gained some weight. He’s been on a bunch of medications since and he says his parents have sent him to all these doctors and even put him through extreme treatments. He mentions to Dr. Charles that he’s so tired of feeling like this and admits he snapped when the other driver cut him off. Sebastian knows his actions were wrong and that he deserves to be punished, he just doesn’t want to feel like this any longer.

Theo wonders if the deep brain stimulation device could be to blame as it's been known to cause changes in personalities. Dr. Charles isn’t certain and orders some tests. The scans show that the device isn’t responsible for his actions, but they also don’t seem to indicate clinical depression. Dr. Charles wonders if it wasn’t the breakup that caused the depression but rather depression that caused his breakup and that he was misdiagnosed.

Looking into the scans, Dr. Charles and Theo find that Sebastian has a hormonal disorder with damage to his pituitary gland. They suspect he sustained an injury to the head that caused it and inform him that with medications they can balance his hormones and he’ll get to feeling more normal. They’re able to get him into an in-patient treatment center, but in doing so things get a bit heated between the pair and Sebastian’s family lawyer.

Dr. Charles notices how Theo got heated in the exchange and Theo admits to having his own experience with misdiagnosis as he thanks Charles for having his back.

As the episode comes to an end, Dr. Charles goes to see Goodwin to inform her that he’s going to need to take a couple of weeks off. He informs her that he’s been having some issues with his medications and he needs to look into some other options. It seems Sebastian’s case got through to him and made Dr. Charles realize that he needs to put his health first.

Hannah’s dad suggests Dean is hiding his true feelings for her

Elsewhere in the episode, Hannah’s father comes to town and Dean does not make the best first impression. Not realizing that Hannah’s father is part of the construction team working on repairs following the hospital blackout, Dean lashes out at Hannah’s father. He later tries to apologize for not making the best impression as Hannah tells Dean that her dad isn’t the biggest fan of their situation, but she’s arranged for them to have lunch. She assures him that once he gets to know Dean, it’ll all be good and she can prove to her dad she can do this.

Unfortunately, lunch doesn’t go as well as Hannah planned. Hannah’s dad questions their plans and shares his belief that a child should be raised by two parents together as he begins questioning things such as where the baby will live and who will pay for things. The lunch ends on an icy note as it becomes clear he won’t be giving Hannah the approval she’s desperately seeking.

After the failed lunch, Dean confronts Hannah’s father and tells him to direct his anger towards him in the future. Before ending the conversation, Dean tells him Hannah is a remarkable woman who would be a great mother.

As Hannah’s dad wraps up work at the hospital for the day, Hannah’s dad tells her he just wants things to be easier for her. She thanks him as he reminds her he loves her, and she reminds him she needs to hear that a little more. Before he leaves, her dad mentions Dean is okay. He says co-parenting will never work, though as Dean is head over heels in love with her.

Goodwin grieves the loss of her ex-husband

Chicago Med season 11, episode 9 began with an unexpectedly somber note as we witnessed the death of Bert. He died surrounded by Goodwin and their kids, and it was clear he was not in pain when he passed.

Goodwin spends the episode packing up his belongings at the care facility, and it’s clear she’s struggling with remembering the Bert she knew in the past and not the Bert she knew in the final months of his life.

As the episode comes to an end, Goodwin admits to Dr. Charles that she’s struggling with which version of Bert she was saying goodbye to. The episode ends as she looks through a box of his belongings and finds an old video from when they were married which she watches through tear-filled eyes as the episode comes to an end.

Frost’s former co-star returns to try to convince Frost to return to showbiz

Early in the episode, Ripley mentions Frost had a reunion with his Nick of Time co-star Ian, who is in town for a convention. Ian later drops into the hospital and surprises Frost. He comes to get an IV before the fan convention.

When Frost comes to check on him, Ian  mentions that there is talk of a reboot of Nick of Time. He’s planning on returning, but the creative team are interested in getting Frost back for the reboot as well. He tries to convince Frost that it would be a great opportunity and would only require him to return to set for a few days to film a special appearance for the premiere. Frost turns down the offer, letting Ian know he’s done with that part of his life.

Later, Frost overhears the man in the room next to Ian defending himself and we learn his pain medication has gone missing. Frost pieces together that Ian took the medication and he heads to the convention to confront him. Ian admits to taking the pills as he makes it clear that he’s not doing as good as he let on, and that Frost leaving the show derailed his own career path. Frost lets Ian know he can assist in getting him help, but Ian denies the offer as he storms off.
