We’ve got some great news for the Chicago Med fans who have been missing Dominic Rains following his exit from the show! Following his exit from Chicago Med after five seasons playing Dr. Crockett Marcel, Rains is heading back to the small screen in what will be his first television role since his exit from NBC’s hit medical drama.
As first reported by Deadline, Rains has joined the cast of Starz’s Power prequel series, Power: Origins, in what is being described as a recurring role. Rains will be trading his scrubs and stethoscope for a gun and badge, taking on the role of Detective Fred Drexel.
According to the character description, Detective Drexel is tasked with navigating an “intense investigation,” after being caught up in a controversial incident within the New York Police Department. No further details about the character have been revealed, but Deadline seemed to hint that the case Detective Drexel will be investigating will get messy.
Interestingly, it won’t just be Rains turning in his scrubs and stethoscope for a gun and badge as Power: Origins will also star former Grey’s Anatomy star Kelly McCreary and The Good Doctor’s Hill Harper. The trio of former TV doctors will all be playing members of the NYPD in the prequel, and it seems fans should expect the trio’s characters to work closely together. McCreary will be playing Officer Melanie Rivers, while Harper has been cast as Detective Burns.
For medical drama fans, it’s going to be fun seeing the former stars of three of the biggest medical shows on broadcast coming together to play TV cops via Power: Origins. Thankfully, it seems like in Chicago Med, Grey’s Anatomy, and The Good Doctor, Power: Origins will look to bring fans a lighter series, which is being described as a “fun, rambunctious exploration of a new time period in the Power franchise.”
This will certainly be welcome news for Chicago Med fans as Rains brilliantly balanced the show’s serious medical cases with a bit of levity that made Crockett a fan favorite. Fans have been hoping to see Rains pass back through the Windy City ever since he exited Chicago Med at the end of season 9, but it seems we’ll have to keep that hope on the back burner as Rains gears up for this new role.
When we last saw Crockett, he chose to leave Gaffney Chicago Medical Center to get a fresh start in Boston. The decision came after Crockett lost a young patient, which resulted in the patient’s father taking his own life. This tragedy made Crockett realize he needed to take some time away from Gaffney to process the loss of his own child, which he had still been struggling to overcome. While the door was left open at the end of season 9 for Crockett to return, the season 10 premiere quickly revealed he had started fresh in Boston after accepting a new job.
Thankfully, Crockett remains alive and well in the One Chicago universe, so hopefully we’ll get to see Rains return sometime down the line for a guest spot.
