Things might not be going well for his character Dr. Ripley at the moment, but things could not be going better for Chicago Med actor Luke Mitchell. Not only is Mitchell in the midst of what has been an incredible performance on NBC’s medical drama which has allowed him to showcase his phenomenal acting chops through the emotional and heartbreaking storyline, but he’s also taking on a new role in his llfe as a first-time dad!
That’s right, congratulations are in order for the Chicago Med fan-favorite and his wife, actress Rebecca Breeds, who have announced the birth of their first child. In a new Instagram post, Mitchell shared the happy news with his followers celebrating the birth of their son in an announcement accompanied by a series of adorable photos.
“Welcome to the world little man. Thanks for choosing us. We love you beyond words,” Mitchell wrote in the post which was accompanied by three beautiful photos including a sweet photo of the baby holding onto Mitchell’s finger.
Breeds first announced her pregnancy on Instagram in November as she debuted her baby bump at a red carpet event, teasing that Baby Mitchell was coming soon.
The pair first met on the set of Australia's long-running soap opera Home and Away and began dating in 2009. Following their engagement in May 2012, the couple exchanged I Do’s in 2013 in a beautiful ceremony at NSW's Kangaroo Valley Bush Retreat. Fans got a glimpse into the picturesque ceremony in a 2023 post in which Breeds celebrated their 10-year wedding anniversary, writing, “Love is the best adventure.”
At this time, NBC has not confirmed whether Mitchell will be taking any time away from Chicago Med but the latest storyline introduced in episode 13, seems to hint the show could have been preparing for him to miss a few episodes for parental leave. With Ripley now suspended and facing termination, it would seem that there is a natural fit for Mitchell to miss a few episodes should the hospital decide to suspend him for an extended period of time.
This could explain why the writers have put Ripley in a place where his job is on the line as it likely is part of a long-term play written to help accommodate Mitchell’s need to take some time off from the show due to the birth of his son. We know he’s going to appear in at least another episode as Mitchell was in the promo for episode 14, but it could be possible a break is coming for Mitchell and that he might miss a few episodes as the season nears its conclusion.
