Things do not look good for Gaffney Medical Center's boss.

Chicago Med had the biggest and boldest cliffhanger of all the One Chicago shows during the fall finale. While Chicago Fire and Chicago PD teased storylines that could go in interesting directions this winter, Med left fans on the edge of their seats with a live hanging in the balance.

The life in question is Dr. Sharon Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson). The character was stabbed in the final moments of the Chicago Med fall finale, and the cut to credits occurred before she could get any help. It did not look good for her. And the promo photos for the upcoming episode, "No Love Lost," is both promising and concerning.

Dr. Goodwin may need emergency surgery

The promising and concerning elements are one in the same. Sharon Goodwin is nowhere to be seen in the promo photos for the January 8 episode, but all the other characters can be seen looking on as a surgery takes place.

While it's definitely not a good sign that we do not see Goodwin, all signs point to her being the one undergoing surgery. The seeming severity of her wounds in the fall finale certainly pointed to serious damage being done.

Dr. Daniel Charles (Oliver Platt), one of Goodwin's oldest friends, can be seen looking on with a very concerned expression on his face. It's possible that Goodwin is not the one on the operating table, but the teaser for "No Love Lost" does suggest that Dr. Dean Archer (Steven Weber) finds her just in time.

Dr. Goodwin has been battling health issues

The promo sees a panicked Archer rushing to Goodwin's side, and calling for help. All we can do is hope that the latter undergoes a successful surgery, and is able to bounce back for her near death experience.

Dr. Goodwin has been through a lot in the last few seasons. Besides all the professional turmoil that has been caused by the shifting ownership and intentions of Gaffney Medical Center, the character had to contend with a diabetes diagnosis in season 9.

S. Epatha Merkerson, the actress who plays Sharon Goodwin, told NBC that it was important for her to relate to viewers also suffering from diabetes, as it is something she deals with in her own life. "I think it’s important because for some reason, it’s not a diagnosis that people talk about," she said. "People think that you can avoid getting Type 2 diabetes, but if you have a family history of it, sometimes there’s not a way out of that."

We can't wait to find out what happens to Goodwin and the rest of the Gaffney team when Chicago Med season 10 returns.
