It’s not often a show that has been on the air for 14 seasons is able to do something for the first time, but Chicago PD is about to pull off something it’s never done before.
For the first time in the show’s history, Chicago PD is doing a proper Christmas episode, which will air sometime this fall ahead of the show’s annual fall break. Plot details for the episode have not been announced by NBC, but filming on the episode has been confirmed by star Marina Squerciati via Instagram.
“When you’re filming a Christmas episode and it’s 82 degrees,” Squerciati wrote via her Instagram stories, sharing a photo of herself and costar John Patrick Flueger on set donning heavy winter jackets.

The post was followed up by a photo of her lying on the floor, a beautifully decorated Christmas tree in the background surrounded by wrapped presents. “I am fine. I’m just melting in this coat. Thanks for checking in,” Squerciati joked in reference to donning the winter wardrobe on set for the Christmas episode while filming in the heat of Chicago.

We imagine filming a Christmas episode when the temperatures in Chicago are over 80 degrees certainly made for an interesting stretch of time on set, but we’re super pumped to know that Chicago PD is doing a proper Christmas episode for the first time in the show’s run! That’s right, while we’ve had dedicated Christmas episodes on Chicago Fire and Chicago Med, Chicago PD has somehow never done a proper Christmas episode through the years, but that is finally changing in season 14.
It’s going to be fun to see how the Christmas backdrop supports the storyline for the episode, and hopefully the episode will be about more than just a case set at Christmastime. We’d love to see Burgess and Ruzek celebrating Christmas with Mack, and it would be so nice to finally see a bit of festive fun woven into the series, which often takes a darker narrative than its One Chicago sister series.
While we’re not expecting the show to suddenly give us Hallmark Christmas movie vibes, we hope the show’s Christmas episode actually injects a bit of festive fun into the episode’s storylines. Let’s have the characters rocking some holiday sweaters and actually talking about their holiday plans, and this extends beyond just Burgess and Ruzek.
What does Christmas look like for the rest of the team, such as Imani, who is sure to have an interesting holiday season with her sister behind bars and now refusing to see her? Maybe we have a holiday party at the precinct and get to have a little fun with Voight being the office Grinch and Trudy calling him out on his lack of holiday spirit. The show could even have fun with a festive-themed crime, like the murder of a Santa Claus or Santa being their prime suspect in a crime.
Hopefully, the show will do more than just use Christmas as a backdrop to the episode and bring fans the proper Christmas episode they’ve waited 12 years for!
