It appears the Chicago PD team is about to finally give the fans a moment they’ve been asking for for years, at least that’s what the promo for the sixth episode of season 12 suggests!

In the promo for episode 6, “Pawns,” we learn that Burgess is in the process of going out for detective as it’s revealed that the next test in her training for the promotion is a ride-along. Sounds easy enough, but the promo suggests it’s going to be anything but easy for Burgess who appears to be about to face what could be one of her most difficult cases on the job as she works to earn her detective shield.

While we’ve come to expect the unexpected with the One Chicago shows, it seems safe to assume that Burgess will get her detective shield when all is said and done, and it’s a moment that fans are more than eager to finally see!

For years, fans have been asking when Brugess, Ruzek, and Atwater might finally pursue advancing their career standings by becoming detectives. With the show losing its last two detectives with the departures of Halstead and Upton, fans have been eager to see if any of Intelligence’s longtime team members would finally pursue getting their detective shield and it honestly makes sense for Burgess to be the first in the group to chase that dream.

It’s not only a natural progression for the character, but it also will give the Intelligence Unit a new detective which comes with new storylines and challenges for the show to explore which is exciting as a fan. Among the stories that will be interesting to see explored is whether Burgess getting a promotion to detective has any impact on her relationship with Ruzek, especially when they’re both in the field together working a case.

Burgess taking a detective role within Intelligence also seems to hint that we’ll get to see her take more of a leadership role within the team which will be exciting to see. It seems safe to assume that Voight might look to her as a new No. 2 which could allow us to see further evolution in their relationship as well, which is exciting and could open the door to new dynamics between the two longtime characters.

Regardless of what storylines await Burgess this season, we’re excited to see the creative team finally exploring the character taking the detective’s test and taking her career to the next level!
