Chicago PD has been the victim of scheduling tweaks. The police drama, along with the rest of the One Chicago franchise, has been delayed a week due to the Joe Biden farewell speech that will air on NBC at 8 p.m. ET.
Despite only lasting 15 minutes, the speech will cut into the time that's typically reserved for the One Chicago Wednesday lineup. As a result, NBC decided to yank all three new episodes, and air reruns in their place. This was a relatively last minute decision, as evidenced by the fact that promos for the new episodes aired at the end of the winter premiere last week.
Chicago PD is coming back January 22
Chicago PD will return Wednesday, January 22. The episode in question, "Zoe," sounds like it'll be a doozy. "An unexpected visitor causes disruption for Ruzek and Burgess," the official synopsis reads on NBC. "Amidst an emotional investigation involving an unidentified young girl."
It's been all but confirmed that the unexpected visitor in question will be Ruzek's estranged dad, Bob (Jack Coleman). It's been a long time since the character has appeared on Chicago PD, and based on his past encounters with his son, he will definitely be on hand to cause some trouble. Especially when he finds out that Ruzek is engaged to Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati).
PD showrunner Gwen Sigan confirmed that Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) and Burgess will be going through a lot of strife over the next few episodes. Their relationship will be tested in both personal and professional ways. The professional strife will likely stem from Chief Deputy Charlie Reid (Shawn Hatosy), who is quietly attempting to get the entire IU under his thumb.
Burzek will have an unwelcome visitor
"I think he likes that Burgess now feels perhaps a little beholden to him," Sigan told TV Insider. "And now he’s also got Voight, so he’s slowly starting to get information on everybody basically so that he can use them like pawns." The IU has always had to contend with crooked cops, and truth be told, the IU has done some crooked things of their own over the years.
All that said, "Zoe" will mark the beginning of a crucial period for Ruzek and Burgess, and will ideally culminate in their marriage. We still don't know when the show plans for them to tie the knot, but it sounds like they will have their hands plenty full in the meantime.
