Chicago PD boss admits Burzek are having "difficult" time planning a wedding

The couple have not had a lot of time to themselves.

Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) and Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) should, technically, be in the happiest place in their history as a couple. They're engaged to be married, they have a daughter, and Burgess has even been promoted to detective. It's a dream on paper. As we know from watching the current season of Chicago PD, though, it's been anything but.

Ruzek has had to contend with the death of a close police friend in the field. Burgess, meanwhile, has been dragged into a tricky situation involving a corrupt new Deputy Chief (Shawn Hatosy). To make it all more stressful, Ruzek's loose canon dad, Bob (Jack Coleman), is set to reappear in their lives.

These various setbacks do not lend themselves to an easygoing routine, nor do they allow much time for wedding planning. Chicago PD showrunner Gwen Sigan detailed this frustration on the part of the characters, and how it's going to shape their outlook as they inch closer to the altar.

" We actually have a story that we'll get to see a little bit of that, and that it's not easy to plan a wedding when they also have a lot of other things going on," Sigan told Cinema Blend. "You know, they've got Makayla, they've got some other stories that come up this year. They're juggling quite a bit."

Burgess, in particular, has more responsibility than ever, and will be working alongside Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) in an effort to shake the aforementioned Deputy Chief off their back. It won't be easy, and it won't allow Burgess much time to, say, pick out flower arrangements.

The couple will make the best of the situation

"I think [many] women know it's pretty difficult to plan a wedding, and then when you have a job like Burgess does, it's like, how," the showrunner posited. "We have a little fun with that this year." Sigan previously told outlets that Burzek are due for a break in terms of interpersonal issues in season 12, given how much they've gone through over the years.

This doesn't mean external issues will cease, however. The showrunner assured Cinema Blend that they will be more challenged than ever. These challenges, however, will ultimately make their wedding all the more rewarding. "The regular things that everyone goes through in life that are difficult, but we do it together as opposed to alone now," Sigan said, when asked to sum up the couple's current state.
