Chicago PD has really had a rough go the last few seasons. It has lost Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) and Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos), both as individuals and a couple. They were vital parts of why PD was so appealing, but the procedural drama has soldiered on and continued to introduce new and exciting characters.
Gwen Sigan knows that fans miss some of the older characters. She does too. During a recent chat with Screen Rant, the Chicago PD showrunner gave her thoughts on IU exits, and revealed which of the characters she would want to bring back into the fold if she could. To the surprise of many, it was not Halstead or Upton. It was Antonio Dawson (Jon Seda).
Gwen Sigan wants Antonio Dawson to return
Sigan told the outlet that there's still a lot than could be done with Dawson's character, despite the fact that he left Chicago PD in season 6. "I'm always curious [about] what happened to Antonio," she admitted. "Where is he now? I felt like he left in such a state—what was his character going through, and how did his character get out?"
The Chicago PD showrunner noted that she would be particularly interested in the dynamic between Dawson and Hank Voight (Jason Beghe), given how close the two men were during their shared time in the IU.
"I think it'd be really interesting to see where he is now and then see him with Voight again I think would be really nice," Sigan added. Screen Rant asked if there were any other characters she would want to bring back, but Dawson topped the list. If she could, she admitted, she would want all of the PD characters to stick around. "I always wish that nobody left and they just came back sparingly."
Antonio Dawson left Chicago PD in season 6
The most interesting aspect of Dawson being singled out is that he would be one of the easiest PD characters to bring back. He's still alive, and the actor who plays him, Jon Seda, is still close friends with cast members like Jason Beghe. The two men even posted for an Instagram photo last April.
Jason Beghe also discussed the possibility of bringing Seda back during a separate interview with Screen Rant. The actor made it clear that he was completely onboard, and would love the chance to work alongside his real life friend again.
"Obviously, it'd be wonderful to have him back," Beghe stated. "He's a fantastic actor, and just a classy gentleman, professional, just fantastic human." PD already managed to bring Al Olinksy (Elias Koteas) back (kinda), so we will keep our fingers crossed for a Dawson reunion!
