We've been waiting on a One Chicago crossover for years. The last one literally took place in the last decade, so it's a major cause for celebration that we will be getting a new crossover event at the end of January.

A lot has changed since the 2019 crossover, the most notable of which are the casts of each of the One Chicago shows. A lot of different faces have popped up in the last six years, and characters who were involved with the previous crossover are nowhere to be found. This will lend a freshness to the proceedings.

Chicago PD showrunner Gwen Sigan recently discussed the crossover event with TV Fanatic. She didn't reveal any details about the plot, but she confirmed that there would be lots of unexpected interactions and team ups that you didn't see coming.

"The cast was all great," she explained. "There are some really interesting pair-ups. You just don’t get to see these characters together all the time from across the different shows." Sigan admitted there was some logistical complications when it came to filming the crossover event while shooting solo episodes at the same time. Ultimately, however, the epic three-parter got made.

"It’s been a challenge, of course, because these things logistically are hard to make," she explained. But we shot it already. We shot it before the holiday, so it’s coming together. It’s big! I think production value is cool." The thing that Sigan is most excited to share with viewers, however, is getting to see PD characters who are typically very stoic interact with lighter characters from the other shows.

Chicago PD has always a reputation for grimness, given how sordid some of the stories can be, so the showrunner found it to be refreshing and amusing to put them in situations in which they're

"It’s interesting seeing people in a different role than they’re usually in and getting to interact," Sigan posited. "We are all so different, too, with tone and everything. Even being on set and having all the fire guys there who are like a riot and fun and getting to see our characters interact."

We have gotten a chance to see minor crossovers throughout the current season, like when Chicago PD's Kevin Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins) popped up on Chicago Med, but we are thrilled to see how the newcomers on each show interact with each other, especially given the harrowing circumstances in which they will be working together. Are you as excited as we are?

The One Chicago crossover will air Wednesday, January 29 on NBC.
