It seems Chicago PD is about to address one of fans’ biggest complaints about the show’s current season in the new year, and it’s going to do so almost immediately.
While season 13 has been serving up character-centric episodes left and right, Chicago PD fans have taken notice of how the show’s current season has been criminally underutilizing Amy Morton’s character, Sergeant Trudy Platt. The original character hasn’t been as involved in the season’s early episodes, with many fans taking to social media to vent their frustrations about the lack of Platt within the current season.
Platt had been used so sparingly in the first episodes of the season, that some fans were even duped into believing Morton was leaving the show. Thankfully, that rumor was quickly dismissed and now the show is about to give Platt the chance to shine as she takes center stage for a Platt-led episode!
As confirmed by TVLine, Chicago PD season 13, episode 9, airing January 14, will follow Platt as she spearheads an investigation into one of her former trainees. The investigation falls into Platt’s lap via a simple favor that then spirals into “something more devastating.”
Plot details remain scarce, but Chicago PD showrunner Gwen Sigan has teased that the episode will “become very emotional” for Platt and will tackle an aspect of police work that the show has never gotten the chance to delve deeply into before.
One thing that Sigan was able to tease is that the episode will see a shift in Platt’s dynamic with Burgess. Rather than Platt being the one taking care of Burgess, the table will turn as Burgess is faced with the daunting task of taking care of her longtime mentor.
"Suddenly, Burgess needs to try to find a way to take care of Platt, and to be there for her friend, and to be supportive, and to also challenge her and challenge her thinking in this case," Sigan told TVLine.
The episode promises to give Morton the chance to really step into the spotlight and deliver a standout performance, something we’ve waited far too long for. Platt has been a part of the Chicago PD team from the very beginning, but it’s not often we get to see Platt front and center, as she tends to often be used in more of a supporting capacity than in a leading role.
Knowing that the writers are not only giving her a character-centric episode, but also using this episode to do something the show has never done before is truly exciting. We cannot wait to see what the writers have cooked up, and we’re excited to see Morton get the chance to spread her wings in an episode that is sure to be a highlight of the season!
Chicago PD season 13 returns on Wednesday, January 7 at 10/9c on NBC.
