It’s been a long and winding road for Adam Ruzek and Kim Burgess, but it seems fans are finally going to be getting the payoff they’ve long dreamed of: a Burzek wedding!
There have been whispers about a wedding finally coming for the pair in season 12, and thanks to Chicago PD star Patrick John Flueger we know that not only is the wedding absolutely taking place this season but that it’s going to come in the season 12 finale airing this May.
“I heard it’s going to happen in the finale,” Flueger told TVLine. That’s right, we’re going to be getting a wedding in the Chicago PD finale this season and it’s an honor that Flueger does not take lightly. “I’m touched that they think that it’s worth ending the season with it, but I don’t know how it’s going to go.”
While Flueger was unable to divulge any specifics about what the wedding will entail, telling TVLine that he doesn’t know what the story is yet, he did seem to hint that we could be getting a proper wedding celebration.
“I don’t know what the story is. I’ve always been fascinated to see how they do an episode of Chicago P.D. and have a proper wedding with all of the corn and cheese that that deserves,” Flueger teased.
Considering the show has already done a quiet courtroom wedding once before when Upton and Halstead snuck off to get married without the presence of their family and friends, we’d honestly feel cheated if the show opted not to give us a more proper wedding ceremony. Sure a courthouse wedding was right for Upton and Halstead, who had long kept their relationship hidden but Burgess and Ruzek's relationship is nothing like Halstead and Uptons.
Of course, we’re not expecting something overly lavish as that would be untrue to the characters, but after 12 seasons of build-up, Burgess and Ruzek – as well as the millions of Burzek fans who have been rooting for the couple from Day 1 – deserve to see the couple exchange I Do’s surrounded by their friends and family. We're picturing a small ceremony with their friends and family, in which the couple can celebrate their love.
Speaking of family. One possible catalyst for the pair finally setting a wedding date in the show might be the recent reveal that Ruzek’s father has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's. With his father’s memory slipping away, it seems likely the couple could commit to a wedding date to help ensure Ruzek’s dad is able to attend the event while he still remembers his son.
We cannot imagine Ruzek’s dad not being present at his wedding, and with the shocking revelation that came out of nowhere in the show’s tenth episode with his Alzheimer’s diagnosis, it seems that might have been the first piece of the puzzle put into place in building towards Burgess and Ruzek getting married in the finale.
Of course, we have a long way to go this season before the season finale arrives in May, but fans will want to keep an eye out for updates in the episodes ahead as the writers build to the season-ending wedding!
