For the last two weeks, Chicago PD’s Intelligence Unit has been operating with a skeleton crew following the exit of one longtime member and the random absence of another.
In the second episode of the season, Chicago PD bid farewell to LaRoyce Hawkins with a sendoff to his character Kevin Atwater. The episode saw Atwater make the decision to step back from the Intelligence Unit in order to accept a teaching position at the police academy in Atlanta. Following Atwater’s exit, we knew that the Intelligence Unit would be down a man and working with limited resources. What we didn’t expect was for those resources to become even more limited because the show randomly sidelined another member of the unit.
Benjamin Levy Aguilar’s Officer Dante Torres has been MIA since episode 2, failing to appear in the third and fourth episodes of the season. Considering that the show just lost a cast member, you would expect that it would be all hands on deck; however, the writers have sidelined Torres without any explanation as to why he hasn't appeared in the episodes or been on the job alongside the rest of the team.
Well, after being unexpectedly sidelined for the last two episodes of Chicago PD, Aguilar will finally be back in the mix this week in the show’s fifth episode. Aguilar’s return as Torres was confirmed via a newly released photo (below) from Chicago PD season 14, episode 5, which shows Torres on the job working alongside Voight, Burgess, and Watts.

Given that episode 5 will be a Burgess-centric episode, which will see her taking a risky undercover assignment, it’ll be interesting to see how much screen time Aguilar gets in the episode. After being sidelined for two episodes, we’re hoping that the writers will put him to good use and make the most of his return. That said, there is a chance that he might be used in more of a supporting role in the episode.
Regardless of how big of a role he has in the episode, we’re just glad to know that he’s actually going to be back and working the case after being sidelined for two weeks.
Upon his return, the Intelligence Unit will be welcoming a new addition, and we’re eager to see how the team takes to Watts. While the rest of the team got the chance to work alongside him during the previous episode, episode 5 will be the first time that Torres and Watts meet, and it’s going to be fun to see what dynamics the writers cook up for the characters.
Given that Watts was originally described as an agent of chaos, there is potential for him to ruffle some feathers on the team. Watts and Torres seem to have unique policing styles, so we could definitely see the pair clicking and working together nicely, but it's also possible they end up butting heads with their unique approaches to the job. Hopefully, we'll get a glimpse of their dynamic in episode 5!
Chicago PD airs Wednesdays at 10/9c on NBC.
