After using its previous episode to introduce fans to the Intelligence Unit’s newest addition, Donovan Watts, Chicago PD season 14, episode 5 shifts the focus onto a longtime member of the team to deliver a Burgess-centered episode.

The episode begins with Burgess in bed in her and Ruzek’s new house, struggling to sleep thanks to a dripping sound. She searches all of the drains in the house but can’t seem to find the source, and it seems this sound has been keeping her up since they moved into the new house. The following morning, Burgess admits to Ruzek it’s like falling asleep in a stranger’s home as Ruzek assures her they’ll make this new place home. While Burgess is struggling to settle in, Mack is thriving and has quickly made new friends at school.

As Ruzek stays behind to help get Mack ready for school, Burgess heads out and catches a call on her way into the precinct, which thrusts her into a high-speed chase with a fleeing offender. The car ends up crashing into a parked vehicle, killing the driver. Things quickly get more complicated when Burgess finds a stack of cash and drugs in the back seat.

When Voight arrives at the scene, Burgess brings him up to speed on her findings. While waiting for him, she ran the firecracker logo on the drugs through the system and got a hit on a violent DTO leader named Jared Munson. The driver was one of his carriers, suggesting that the woman was on her way to a pickup or drop-off. Narcotics has been trying to bring Munson in for years, as his meth is quite lethal, and Burgess suggests that this could give them the chance to finally catch him by sending her undercover, posing as someone who finds the cash and drugs and returns them to Munson.

Regrouping back at the precinct, Voight brings the rest of the team up to speed about Munson and Burgess’s undercover plan. Knowing that she could be undercover for an extended stretch, Burgess and Ruzek get things in order with Mack, as Ruzek admits he hates that she’ll miss the block party, which was going to give them the chance to meet their neighbors. She suggests that maybe this undercover gig is for the best, as it might give her that “happy to be home feeling.”

Burgess heads out and approaches one of Munson’s runners, showing him a photo of the cash and drugs that she’s trying to return with a finder’s fee. She asks him to pass along a message to Munson for her. The runner doesn’t jump immediately on making the call, so Burgess gets settled into her undercover apartment, where she’s able to surprisingly settle in easier than it seems she has been at her new home. Just before she falls asleep, she gets a text from Munson with a meetup time and location for the following day.

At the meet-up location, it’s not Munson who shows up. Instead, he sends his girlfriend, who takes her a few blocks to a bar to meet with Munson face-to-face. Burgess explains that she found the drugs and money after seeing his girl crash her car. He presses her on why she didn’t keep the money, and Burgess remarks that she knows that happens to people who steal from him.

Rather than accept her deal, Munson makes her one of his own. She’ll help him with a job and get her cut from it.

The following day, Burgess and Munson’s girlfriend head out to the drop-off location. Just as Burgess pulls the bag of cash from the car, a man named Iggy rushes up on them and holds them at gunpoint. Ruzek almost rushes in to provide backup, but Burgess is able to get the upper hand on the man, who flees just as quickly as he arrived.

Later that night, Burgess calls to check in on things at home as Ruzek informs her the plumber was unable to find any leaks in the house. After their call, Burgess hears a knock at the door and gets a surprise visit from Munson. He informs her that Iggy can’t be found as he presses her for information about her past before he tells her to meet him at the bar in 30 minutes. Once he leaves, Burgess calls Ruzek and is worried she could have been burned, as she had left out both her undercover and real phones.

She ultimately decides to stay undercover and heads to the bar to meet him. When she arrives at the bar, Munson isn’t there. Instead, it’s Dee Dee who greets her and gives her the drop-off information.

Burgess takes this information to the precinct, and Watts finds a player on the board they could try squeezing but Voight doesn’t want to chase it down given Burgess is still in play. Burgess comes up with a plan to plant a bug in the house of Munson’s cook, which entails stealing a key from Dee Dee’s place when she’s at beauty school.

When Burgess arrives at Dee Dee’s apartment, she hears screaming inside and rushes in to find Dee Dee in a manic state after catching Munson cheating on her. Burgess helps calm Dee Dee down as she searches for her phone so she can call Dee Dee’s sponsor, but it’s too late for that as Dee Dee is already hyped up on something and experiencing delusions. Burgess stays with her until Dee Dee finally crashes and makes an imprint of the key while she’s sleeping. As she prepares to head out, Dee comes to and Burgess asks her not to leave town so that she can help her.

Back at her undercover apartment, Ruzek calls to check in, and Burgess lets him know the key is good. She’s testing the wire and ready to plant it, as Ruzek warns her that she needs to get out now, as she’s been made. Munson did a slow roll by their house and got eyes on Mack, hinting her cover has been blown. Burgess heads out and finds Munson out front waiting for her. He orders her to get in the car as she pulls out her gun and announces herself as being CPD.

Burgess orders him out of the car, but he gets the upper hand on her and turns the gun on her as he presses her for answers on where Dee Dee has gone; it turns out, she took the money from his safe and is in the wind. Munson seems prepared to shoot Burgess, but sirens spook him and he pistol-whips her before racing out. Watts arrives at the scene and he and Burgess pursue Munson. While they find his car, there is no sign of him.

Back at the precinct, the team works to track down Dee Dee and trace down the address of her friend Tater. Unfortunately, when they reach the house, both Tater and Dee Dee are already dead. Before her death, Dee Dee was able to stab Munson. Burgess and Watts follow a blood trail that ends just outside the house where Munson parked.

After regrouping to dig into Munson’s known associates, the unit begins searching local boxing gyms where he might be holed up. Burgess and Watts reach a gym on their list and find signs of blood, racing in before he can give them the slip again. Once inside, Munson bursts through the door with a gun in hand, and Burgess fires off a series of shots, killing him instantly.

While the job is done, Burgess can’t shake the guilt of being made. Voight suggests that Munson might have been onto them from the start, noting he was smart about his approach in running her undercover car and tracked down the rental place they use. Voight sends Burgess home, and she joins Ruzek and Mack at the block party. While there, she meets Wayne, who lives two doors down and apologizes for ignoring her the previous day when she waved as he was on two calls. He suggests that the street just got safer with them moving there, but something feels off about Wayne.

Burgess rejoins Ruzek and assures him she’s feeling more settled; however, as the episode comes to a close, we see Burgess lying awake in bed again, suggesting her struggle is far from over.
