After a string of disappointing updates, Chicago PD fans have finally gotten a promising new update about the upcoming 14th season!

It’s been a long and taxing offseason for Chicago PD fans, and that feels like an understatement. Like the other One Chicago shows, Chicago PD began its summer hiatus much earlier than we expected, with the season 13 finale airing mid-May. Then word broke just weeks after the finale that Chicago PD wouldn’t return until October 7, which was later than we expected considering shows such as The Traitors: New Blood will premiere in mid-September.

Just when we got over the fact that this would be one of the longest summer hiatus in the history of Chicago PD, word broke that the show would be losing an original cast member. Ahead of the Fourth of July holiday, it was reported that LaRoyce Hawkins would be exiting the show after 13 seasons playing Officer Kevin Atwater.

While Hawkins will return for a few episodes at the top of the season to bring Atwater fans a proper on-screen exit rather than an off-screen departure between seasons, the news has been met with criticism among fans. It doesn’t help that his planned replacement is yet another agent of chaos, a decision that has left fans feeling more than a little frustrated

After weeks of bad news, though, we’ve finally gotten our first positive update of the summer!

Chicago PD season 14 officially begins filming this July

Chicago PD season 14 might not premiere until October 7, but production on the new season is about to begin! Marina Squerciati has confirmed she’ll officially be back on set to begin filming season 14 on July 22, which is just days away!

“Nothing humbles you like the first workout after a hiatus full of cookies. I start filming in TEN DAYS. I’M NOT PANICKING AT ALL,” Squerciati wrote in an Instagram Stories post on July 12.

It’s unclear whether July 22 will be the first official day of production on the new season or simply Squerciati’s first day filming. Either way, we’re closing in on a major milestone with production about to begin for the show.

With filming beginning on or around July 22, we should begin to get new behind-the-scenes content from the cast, which is always a welcome gift during the long summer hiatus. It also seems highly likely that should any additional cast shakeups be coming, we’ll learn about them in the coming days. It also seems likely that NBC will soon be announcing Hawkins’ replacement, as we imagine the actor will be introduced early in the season unless they choose to put some time between Hawkins’ exit and the arrival of his replacement.

While we’re not ready to think of Hawkins’ replacement, we are eager to see who NBC brings in to join the cast. We’re also eager to find out more about the upcoming season and should begin to see more updates in the months ahead as we inch closer to the One Chicago shows’ returns this October!
