We have seen Hank Voight deal with a host of issues over the years. The death of his son, the deaths of his best friend, and the departure of multiple IU officers who have meant a lot to him. One thing we have not seen, though, is Voight the romantic.

The character has been single since the death of his wife, which took place years before Chicago PD started. He has been alone for as long as he has been on our TV screen, but season 12 is hinting at a possible change. ASA Nina Chapman (Sara Bues) confessed to having feelings for the veteran cop in a recent episode, and it was obvious that he didn't know how to react.

Voight has always been committed to his late wife

It was an exciting development, and one that Voight actor Jason Beghe discussed at length during a recent interview with Deadline. While he was unsure of what the term "shipping" meant, and was not aware of the fact that PD fans have been shipping Voight and Chapman, he did reflect on what their dynamic could mean for the former moving forward.

Beghe told the outlet that he believes Voight has maintained his commitment to his late wife over the years. "I just always thought he was devoted to Camille," he explained. "He wasn’t lonely, he was just alone because he has this deep sense of honor. He had made this commitment to this woman, and it was a simple commitment."

Beghe noted that Voight was not the kind of guy who was swayed by other women because of the emotional attachment he had to his wife. Romance is not something he's looking for, and as such, the declaration of love from Chapman took him by surprise.

Voight and Chapman have a strong professional bond

Chicago PD boss Gwen Sigan spoke on this surprise during a separate interview with Parade. She noted, with delight, that Voight was not expecting to be pursued romantically, and he will have to reflect on what it means for his future while Chapman is away on business.

"Her leaving now actually gives us a nice period of time for him to process some of it, and in a Voight way because he’s not the best at processing emotion," the showrunner explained. The character has not expressed romantic feelings toward Chapman, but their connection is undeniable and it will be fascinating to see how this additional tension informs their interactions in the field.
