Chicago PD star reveals how Burgess and Voight's relationship is going to change
Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) has been going through a lot in Chicago PD season 12. The character has been promoted to detective after years of dedicated service, and yet, her career has never been in a more precarious situation.
She's one of the senior members of the IU, and yet, there's still a lot for her to learn when it comes to working more closely with her boss, Hank Voight (Jason Beghe). This is something the actress who plays Burgess discussed during a recent interview with TV Insider.
Burgess is the latest IU member to get promoted
Squerciati, who has been part of Chicago PD since day one, admits that her character's promotion will have an impact on the way she interacts with her boss, Voight. She told the outlet that she thinks Burgess' detective status will allow for "more trust and "confidence" with Voight, which makes sense given where both characters are at in their lives.
Burgess has been working tirelessly for her promotion, and her decision to cover for Dante Torres (Benjamin Levy Aguilar) after the younger officer made a crucial mistake regarding one of his field informants, suggests a sense of leadership that wasn't present in her early years.
She is officially entering the veteran stage of her police career, and frankly, Voight doesn't have that many people he shares history with. He's had a good relationship over the years with Burgess, but they have never been as close as Voight and Erin Lindsay (Sophia Bush) or even Voight and Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos).
She's taken on more of a veteran role in the IU
Upton's departure at the end of season 12 was tough on Voight. The two had grown closer than ever in the wake of Halstead's exit, and dramatically speaking, there is a huge, Upton filled gap that PD has yet to properly fill. They did, briefly, with Emily Martel (Victoria Cartagena), but that ended tragically.
We're not suggesting that Burgess is going to become the new Upton, or that she's going to lose the characteristics that have made her so distinct. We do believe, however, that Burgess could transition into a sort of confidante role for Voight, given her elevated status within the IU and the fact that the troubled Sergeant needs someone to bouce off of.
Kim Burgess is going to be one of Chicago PD's most important characters heading into the second half of season 12. Her role in covering up the Torres scandal puts her at risk, while her engagement and upcoming marriage to Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) places her front and center in terms of the show's emotional crux. We hope her friendship with Voight is also given the screen time it deserves.
