Chicago PD: Why fans should be worried about Kim Burgess in season 12
Chicago PD put several careers at risk during its fall finale. Dante Torres (Benjamin Levy Aguilar) was reluctant to come clean about his romance with a former informant, and was promptly scolded by the rest of his IU peers.
Rightfully so, even if the likes of Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) have done far worse during their time with a badge. Torres' actions did not strictly impact himself, though. His attempts to cover up his mistakes put rookie officer Kiana Cook (Toya Turner) at risk, but we're here to discuss another person in the IU inner circle: Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati).
Burgess risked her career to cover for Torres
Burgess knew about Torres' affair with his informant before anybody else, and agreed to keep it under wraps. This obviously made her complicit in the whole charade, so if ever Torres' affair comes to light, in a legal sense, Burgess will also be on the line.
Benjamin Levy Aguilar talked about the dynamic between Burgess and his character during a recent interview with TV Line. He admitted that Burgess took a big risk covering for Torres, and it speaks to their bond as friends and partners:
"She’s definitely proven herself to be an incredible friend and partner. She didn’t have to do this. That much of him being so appreciative, I’m sure he is."
Torres and Burgess have developed a strong bond
Unfortunately, Burgess' loyalty could backfire during the second half of season 12. Charlie Reid (Shawn Hatosy), the Deputy Chief of CPD, implied that he was very much aware of what went down between Torres and his informant. He didn't come right out and say, but the fall finale came to a close with the character asking Voight if he wanted to be "friends."
All signs point to Reid wielding his knowledge, or at the very least, his suspicions, to blackmail the IU and ensure they do what he wants. If they decide to rebel, then Torres and even Burgess will be first up on the chopping block.
"[Burgess is] covering for him, and she’s risking her life and her job to protect him," Aguilar told the outlet. "And that says a lot about her." We can only hope that Voight and the rest of the IU manage to escape whatever Reid has in store for them as season 12 unfolds. We've seen them blackmail federal officers not that long ago, so they should have no problem with a local Chief. Right?
