An original Blue Bloods cast member is set to join Donnie Wahlberg’s Boston Blue.
While we might not get to see the Reagan family together every episode, fans will get to see a familiar face in the form of Erin Reagan, played by Bridget Moynahan. Deadline reports that Danny’s sister will be joining her brother in his new home in Boston, although it may be temporary. She will appear in the premiere episode, and Moynahan is also going to direct an episode at some point during the season.
Wahlberg announced the news on his Instagram, sharing a photo with his television sister, who he worked alongside for 14 seasons. It will be a nice treat for fans who have wanted to see members of the cast appear in Boston Blue as well.
In Boston Blue, Danny will no longer be working as a Detective in New York. He'll have since moved down to Boston to be close to his son, Sean, now played by Mika Amonsen. Sean will be working as a patrolman, making his own way as he marks his career in law enforcement, like his family.
Boston Blue will also introduce us to Danny’s new partner at work, Lena Silver (Sonequa Martin-Green), who also comes from a law enforcement family. Cast members include Marcus Scribner, Gloria Reuben, Maggie Lawson, and Ernie Hudson.
Blue Bloods was cancelled after 14 seasons, leaving both the cast and fans reeling. Despite the abrupt ending, Wahlberg was able to bring back his iconic role with the new spin-off, which has been touted as a universe within the Blue Bloods universe. From what we can tell, even though Boston Blue has a similar pattern with a law enforcement family being featured, there are likely to be some differences we see.
As of this writing, there is no word on whether other former cast members from Blue Bloods will make an appearance, but we’re excited to see Danny and Erin once again on screen. Len Cariou, who played grandfather Henry Reagan on the show, has been cast in a new series starring Kevin Kline, so it is unlikely we will see him early in Boston Blue's run. There’s also a chance we could get Tom Selleck in an appearance, but so far, nothing is confirmed on who else from Blue Bloods will make their debut in Boston.
Boston Blue is set to air on Friday, October 17 at 10/9c. It will then air the next day on Paramount+. Make sure to follow One Chicago Center for more updates on the series as we get closer to its premiere.
