FBI: Most Wanted has the unenviable task of closing out a show that has already been canceled. It's not ideal, of course, and character arcs have to be resolved in ways that wouldn't have been needed had the show been renewed for an additional season. But there is a silver lining, and it has to do with Sheryll Barnes (Roxy Sternberg).

Barnes has been part of the Most Wanted team since day one, but the latest episode, "Gut Job," has us wondering whether the agent has decided to move on to a new chapter of her life. She looked at an opening for Task Force Supervisor in Washington, DC, which had a submission deadline of April 11. The episode aired April 8, for context.

Fouled Out
“Fouled Out” – After the Fugitive Task Force mobilizes to help apprehend an active shooter on a college campus in Queens, they find themselves in the middle of the glitzy world of college basketball. Also, Barnes and Charlotte attempt to work on their relationship, on FBI: MOST WANTED, Tuesday, March 26 (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network, and streaming on Paramount+ (live and on-demand for Paramount+ with SHOWTIME subscribers, or on-demand for Paramount+ Essential subscribers

Now we've seen characters on procedural dramas flirt with the idea of taking on a new position, only to turn around and stick it out with their current role. The thing is, FBI: Most Wanted doesn't have a lot more time on the air. The spinoff is set to wrap up on May 20th, so this is rare instance of a character actually being able to prolong their small screen life if they leave.

The FBI franchise could be working on an arc that brings Barnes over to the flagship series, if not in a lead at least a supporting capacity. Why do we think this? Well, the agent sat for a meeting with Isobel Castille (Alana De La Garza), an FBI veteran. Barnes told Castille that she was looking for a change in her life, and feels the position of Task Force Supervisor could initiate that change.

"There’s been a lot of change in my life recently, and it’s got me thinking maybe I should change, too, maybe shake things up, start a new path," the agent told Castille. Barnes clarified that she didn't have a decision ready, but felt that she owed it to herself and her family. The crucial detail that closed out this revelatory chat, though, was when Barnes asked Castille to keep things under wraps.

Barnes could extend her story arc on FBI

Above & Beyond
“Above & Beyond” – When a mysterious deal goes south, leaving behind multiple bodies, the Fugitive Task Force heads to Virginia to put the pieces together with the help of a familiar face and new addition to the team, Special Agent Nina Chase (new series regular Shantel VanSanten). Also, Remy continues to grapple with the aftermath of connecting with his long-lost nephew, on the fifth season premiere of FBI: MOST WANTED, Tuesday, Feb. 13 (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network,

"I’ll tell Remy and the rest of the team if and when the time’s right," Barnes asserted. "Right now I just want to explore this on my own, you know? Makes things easier." It's possible that the agent will opt to stay with the Most Wanted team, but she would inarguably prove more valuable to the FBI franchise as a whole if she took the Task Force Supervisor gig. Better to accept the lifeline than go down on a sinking ship, right?

We still have over a month before FBI: Most Wanted ends, and we're excited to see if the franchise decides to pull the trigger and relocate Barnes in an effort to keep her story going.
