Dr. Naomi Howard looked like she might be a lifer on Chicago Med, but after actress Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut revealed to fans that she wouldn't be back to film anything new for season 12, fans were bracing for the inevitable. During episode 2, "The Third Rail," Naomi's departure and the end of her relationship with Dr. John Frost were handled with brief dialogue early in the episode.
It turns out Naomi is now in Portland, having accepted a fellowship at a hospital there. It emerges as Frost and Mitch Ripley banter at their apartment, where Ripley catches Frost showering with another
woman. It's an awkward moment, to say the least, and results in a fight between the duo.
"Look, when Naomi got that fellowship in Portland and dumped you," Ripley says. "Easy, mutual breakup. But sure, go ahead," Frost replies. Ripley explains that he was 100 percent there for Frost while he processed Naomi's departure and declares Frost is taking liberties with 'the roommate code.' Frost promises to pay more attention—after he gets rid of his latest conquest, naturally.
That firmly shuts the door on Frost's relationship with Naomi and opens the door up for him to have another and hopefully for him to have a longer-lasting romance with another character. Perhaps, for now, headstrong newbie Annie Wu, with whom Ripley recently clashed, might light a fire under Frost some day. But for right now, the character seems content playing the field.
Frost has already had a complicated romantic history that includes Chicago Fire mainstay Lyla Novak, which resulted in an on-and-off again fling that ended when she partnered up with one of her fellow
Fire mainstays, Vasquez. He was also groomed by his co-star on the sitcom Nick of Time, Ainsley Towne, into a relationship that spanned a portion of Frost’s teenage years and later became
difficult for him to grapple with.
And what's Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut up to? The actress continues to appear in short film projects, like the upcoming Dead Girls, and has become a staple in holiday TV films like Mistletoe and Matrimony. She's also got a healthy guest-starred career in an assortment of dramas, so don't be surprised if she turns up on another show. She also has a healthy modeling career and can be seen quite frequently on Broadway, which means if you're missing the good doc, you can always find her doing something cool.
