When word broke that Marlyne Barrett was taking a step back from Chicago Med for personal reasons, the biggest question became how the show would explain Maggie’s absence. Heading into the season 11 premiere, it was expected that the show would address Maggie’s exit, and it did. Unfortunately, the explanation provided left us with more questions than answers.
In the season 11 premiere, the only information provided to us was that Maggie had left Chicago, and it seemed that she might not have left on the best of terms. When Charles asked Goodwin if she had heard from Maggie since she left, Goodwin replied that she had not heard a peep, a surprising development given the friendship between Maggie and Goodwin.
As the premiere continued, we hoped for additional context, but the only other mention of Maggie came in the form of Doris replying that she was only keeping Maggie’s shoes warm until she returned. The comment gave fans hope that Maggie would make her way back to Gaffney later in the season, but that hope is quickly slipping away.
We’re racing towards the Chicago Med season 11 finale, and it’s time to acknowledge that we’re long overdue for a proper update on Maggie.
Yes, I understand that the writers likely chose to keep the details surrounding Maggie’s exit vague to make it easier to bring the character back down the line. However, it’s becoming clear that we’re not likely to see Marlyne Barrett return as Maggie in season 11, and the least the show could do is provide viewers with some sort of proper explanation as to why Maggie left town and where she has relocated to.
Chicago Med needs to give us a new update on Maggie
Cast exits are nothing new to the One Chicago franchise, but typically when a major character has exited the show, we get some sort of concrete answer as to where they’ve gone.
When Dominic Rains exited the show ahead of season 10, the show explained that Crockett had moved to Boston following a goodbye party at the hospital. When Guy Lockard left the show, it was explained that Dylan needed to leave Gaffney to get a fresh start after the death of a patient who he had become romantically involved with. When Kristen Hager exited the series, it was explained that Stevie moved to Michigan to try to reconcile with her estranged husband.
These are just a few recent examples of how the show has handled unexpected cast departures. While these updates did not provide fans with an abundance of details, they at least gave us a better idea of where the character went and why they left town. With Maggie, neither of these pieces of information has been shared.
We don’t know why Maggie left Gaffney or where she’s gone. That needs to change, as it’s getting annoying that the show has yet to provide us with any real information on what happened to Maggie or even acknowledged her absence
Maggie was a crucial part of the Gaffney family and it’s frustrating that the writers failed to give her a more fleshed-out exit storyline. It’s also frustrating that despite the strong connections she shared with her colleagues at Gaffney, the show hasn’t even used those connections as an organic way to keep Maggie’s spirit alive on the show. And it’s something that could be easily remedied.
A simple conversation here and there would be an amazing way to update fans on Maggie and keep her spirit alive on the show until the day comes when Barrett might return. Anything would be better than keeping us in the dark and making us think Maggie just up and left town and also cut off communication with her friends at Gaffney.
We’ve got a few episodes left this season, and I can only hope the show might finally give us an update on Maggie that helps to answer the burning question on our mind regarding why exactly she left Gaffney.
