Mark Harmon allegedly plans to make additional cameos on NCIS: Origins

The veteran actor enjoyed his surprise stint on the prequel.

Mark Harmon was involved with NCIS: Origins from day one. The actor serves as a producer on the prequel series, as well as the narrator of each episode. He's been replaced as Leroy Jethro Gibbs by Austin Stowell, but his spirit is still very much felt in the character.

Harmon made a surprise cameo as Gibbs in a recent episode, despite previously stating that he had gotten his fill of playing the character onscreen. He had so much fun in his cameo that he allegedly plans to make additional appearances on NCIS: Origins moving forward (in addition to narrating).

This claim comes from a source close to the actor. The unnamed source told Closer that Harmon has already grown tired of retirement, and finds himself bored without consistently challenging work. "He finds working with his former colleagues a lot more stimulating than staying home with a list of repairs to be done," the source alleged.

Harmon left NCIS in 2021, claiming that he'd done everything he wanted to with the character. He had great admiration for the cast and crew, and was clearly invested enough in Gibbs to produce and be a narrator for the Origins spinoff, but the source makes it sound as though he's itching to get back into action.

"It seems his retirement plans have changed, and he wants to do more cameos on NCIS," the source added. "In addition to the narration he does. Plus, he’s looking for other acting and producing work." The "other acting" is already in the works, actually.

The actor will continue to narrate NCIS: Origins

Harmon is set to appear in Freaky Friday 2, the anticipated sequel to the beloved Disney film. He will reprise his role as the love interest to Jamie Lee Curtis' character, and make his official return to the big screen after a decade and a half absence.

If the source's claims about Mark Harmon are true, and the actor makes more cameo appearances on NCIS: Origins, it's possible he would consider making a return to the flagship series. Fans were mostly satisfied with Gibbs' farewell in season 19, but a return could mean a huge storyline and a renewed interest in the series, even if its only for a few episodes.

As with all anonymous sources, however, the Closer report should be taken with a grain of salt. Harmon's lone appearance on NCIS: Origins does not guarantee a full blown comeback, even if it does allude to some exciting possibilities down the line.
