Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) has been through the ringer the last few years. She's gotten married, sure, but she has also had her life threatened multiple times, and suffered a shrapnel injury after a big house explosion in season 11. The One Chicago crossover didn't make things any easier.
As the promo showed, Kidd was one of two One Chicago leads who were trapped underground following an explosion. She was forced to sit tight and aid the civilians who were trapped with her while Chicago Med, PD and Fire worked together to rescue them. It looked like things were going to end poorly for Kidd when oxygen began to drop, but a funny thing happened in the lead up to the One Chicago crossover airing.
Stella Kidd is confirmed to be in episode 1312
The logline for next week's Chicago Fire episode was released by NBC, and it included Kidd. All eyes were on the the character as she struggled to stay alive, and here we were with written confirmation that we would be seeing her in season 13 episode 12, aka "Relief Cut." Well, at least we know she's ok.
The logline for "Relief Cut" reveals that Stella Kidd will be paid a visit by an estranged family member. It's something that Chicago Fire showrunner Andrea Newman hinted at earlier in the season, which is notable given how little fans have been told about the character's family.
Kidd will be visited by a cousin who lives out of town, which will not only shed light on her youth and her backstory in ways we haven't seen before, but will likely bring about internal debates about Kidd's desire to start a family of her own.
The character will be visited by her cousin
The character has been conflicted as to whether she wants kids with Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney), or if she wants to focus on her career. This is something that Miranda Rae Mayo acknowledged during an interview with Soaps.com.
"I think there’s some perfectionism that’s kind of paralyzing her," the actress explained. "And also, I mean, look at her job, look at all of the horrific things that she sees on a day-to-day basis." We are curious to see whether Kidd's latest near-death experience will change her outlook, and whether a visit with her cousin will push her to make a decision, one way or the other.
In the broader sense, we're just glad that Kidd made it through the One Chicago crossover in one piece. It would have been devastating if those Severide tears we saw during the crossover promo were over her death.
