Chicago Med might not have ended with any character’s life on the line, but it seems death will come knocking on the doorstep for one character in the season 12 premiere.
Ahead of the season 12 premiere on October 7, NBC has released a batch of new trailers for the upcoming seasons of its One Chicago shows, including a brand new spot for Chicago Med. While we got a brief glimpse of what’s to come via the first One Chicago trailer, this new season 12 trailer puts a bigger focus on Chicago Med with a spot that finally gives fans a proper look at what’s to come in the new season.
There is a lot to process in the promo, which gives fans their first looks at both new and returning characters with an overarching theme of life and death tying together the various clips we see from the upcoming premiere.
“Life is so fragile. We see a lot of loss here at the hospital; a lot of hope too. It’s taught me one thing: all we really have is right now,” Ripley’s voice echoes over the trailer.
It’s unclear who Ripley is saying this to, but the speech appears to be prompted by the death of a patient. As Ripley’s words play over the footage, we see a brief moment in which his patient flatlines just as someone rushes in with a medical cooler, hinting that perhaps this patient was waiting for a donor organ that arrived too late.
Heading into season 12, NBC has yet to announce the additions of any new series regulars or recurring characters, but the promo does include a few glimpses at some new faces. This includes an unnamed doctor we have not yet met who is seen in one scene working alongside Archer. Considering it's been a while since we’ve seen the show introduce any new residents or interns, it stands to reason that perhaps Chicago Med is about to introduce a few new physicians, and Ripley’s speech seems like the kind of assurance that would be given to a new doctor following the loss of their patient.
If this is indeed the case, it’s going to be exciting to see Ripley taking on a mentorship role and working alongside new doctors within the hospital. We haven’t gotten to see this much over the years and it would be exciting to see Ripley mentor someone new and get to see what that dynamic looks like for him, in particular. While change is hard and we never like saying goodbye to characters we come to know and love, such as Dr. Naomi Howard, who will not be returning for season 12, it is nice to see new dynamics explored via the introduction of fresh faces, and we’d love to see Ripley follow the lead of those who have mentored him, such as Charles, by helping a new doctor navigate life in the hospital.
