We’ve been speculating for weeks now that Chicago PD season 13 was likely to bring about the death of a key character, and we’re beginning to worry that death might be coming ahead of the season finale.
Season 13 has established that Ruzek’s dad’s health has been quickly declining, with the writers using this storyline to explain Patrick John Flueger’s absence during part of his leave. Upon his return, we learned via a conversation between Ruzek and Burgess that the doctors had informed him that his dad likely only had a few months to live.
It’s clear that Ruzek’s dad does not have long, and we’ve been anticipating that his death could occur in the final episodes of the season. We had wondered if perhaps Bob’s death could come in the season finale, but the plot details for Chicago PD season 13, episode 19, have us fearing that his death could perhaps be coming sooner than we expected.
Episode 19 will see Ruzek investigating a mysterious VHS tape found among his father’s belongings. This discovery will lead to a series of unexpected consequences, which will send the Intelligence Unit scrambling to uncover the truth behind the cold case.
The phrasing of the synopsis about Ruzek finding the VHS tape “among his father’s belongings” seems to suggest that Ruzek’s dad passes away by the time episode 19 arrives. This specific choice of words tends to imply a character is sorting through a loved one’s possessions after their death, which suggests that the synopsis for the episode is foreshadowing that Ruzek’s father may die before the events of episode 19 unfold.
In fact, there is a chance that we could see the episode open with news of Bob’s passing, as it would make sense for the writers to have the character die off-screen. While we would love to see Jack Coleman back in the role one final time, his return isn’t necessary, and this is one death that would make sense to unfold off-screen.
Now, while we are fearing the worst, there is one other possible explanation to this storyline. A few episodes back, it was revealed that Ruzek and Burgess were going to sell their home and look to find a new place to live elsewhere in the city in an effort to move to a place where Makayla has the best opportunities for growth.
Given that Burgess and Ruzek live in his father’s former home, it’s possible that Ruzek will stumble upon the VHS tape while preparing for the move and cleaning out the house. After all, it would make sense for Bob to have some old belongings still in the house from before Ruzek bought the house from his dad and turned it into his family’s home.
This storyline would definitely be much preferred than Bob’s death, but fans might want to brace themselves as there is a chance Bob’s death could be coming in the next two episodes.
