One Chicago is always good for a surprising death or two. The franchise traffics in very intense settings, whether it be a police station, a hospital or a firehouse, so there are bound to be instances in which characters put their life on the line. It comes with the job description.
Chicago Med, Chicago Fire and Chicago PD have given fans shocking deaths throughout the years, but 2024 was different. None of the main characters from these shows died, but they were seriously impacted by the deaths that occured around them. As such, we decided to look back at the ones that had the biggest impact in 2024 (which means the tail end of the previous season and the first half of the current season!).
Chicago Med suffered a major tragedy in season 9 finale
Chicago Med has avoided any major deaths in season 10, but the season 9 finale featured two of the most tragic passings in recent show history. Bill and Colin Storch, a father and son, died as a result of the latter's failed liver transplant. Colin died from the procedure being unsuccessful, and a bereft Bill took his own life as a result.
This absolutely devastated Dr. Crockett Marcel (Dominic Rains). The character had been one of the show's main character for multiple seasons, but he found he could no longer work at Gaffney after such a tragedy. He decided to leave the show, macking the Storch's deaths even more impactful to the show overall.
Similarly traumatic deaths occurred on Chicago PD. Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) was thrilled to be working alongside fellow cop Emily Martel (Victoria Cartagena) in the season 12 episode "Blood Bleeds Blue." It seemed like she could even qualify for an IU position, but Martel was shot and killed in the line of duty.
Chicago PD suffered two surprising season 12 deaths
Her death, which occurred when the duo responded to a disturbance call, was so quick and out of nowhere that it shocked Ruzek and the fans in equal measure. In many ways, Ruzek is still reeling from the loss. Then there was Dane Torres (Benjamin Levy Aguilar), whose complicated relationship with ex informant and drug queen pen Gloria Perez (Yara Martinez) led to her death.
Perez had appeared in PD's previous season, which is when her affair with Torres began, but the two failed to see eye to eye when they reconnected in the season 12 episode "Penance." While there was never really going to be a way for Torres to continue on as a cop as long as Perez had dirt on him, the way in which she was killed was still a narratively surprising moment.
