One Chicago is returning this week (here's what you need to know)

The franchise is starting off the new year with a bang!

One Chicago took all of December off, which is a pretty standard practice for NBC. There's holiday specials and various airings of classics that take the spot typically occupied by Chicago Fire and its adjacent shows. Fortunately, 2025 is here, and the franchise is back with brand new episodes.

The last few years have been tricky for One Chicago (and most scripted shows) when it comes to scheduling. The writers and actors strike caused several shows to be delayed and shortened, which led to some confusion about air dates/return dates. That's where this post comes in.

One Chicago returns on Wednesday, January 8

We can happily confirm that Chicago Med, Chicago Fire and Chicago PD will be coming back on Wednesday, January 8. All three shows will air new episodes in their usual time slots, and resolve the cliffhangers that each of their fall finales set up.

One Chicago Wednesday will follows its usual airing order on January 8, which is to say, Med will kick things off at 8/7c, followed by Fire at 9/8c and PD at 10/9c. Nothing new there. This schedule will not be upheld for the entirety of January, however.

The One Chicago crossover, which will be airing January 29, will radically shake up the lineup. Instead of Chicago Med serving as the lead in to the rest of the franchise, Chicago Fire will kick things off and air at 8/7c.

The lineup will change on Wedesday, January 29

This decision stemmed from the fact that the inciting incident that will drive the plot for all three shows will occur during Chicago Fire. Med and PD will subsequently deal with the aftermath of the incident, which involves a disaster in an office building.

The incident will not only cause chaos throughout the city, but the damage the building sustains will cause several people to be trapped underground. Two of which, NBC confirmed, will be central cast members of one of the One Chicago shows.

The big takeaways heading into January 2025 is that you will be able to enjoy several weeks of One Chicago at its usual time, and in its usual order, but don't be concerned/confused when you turn the TV on at the end of the month and see Chicago Fire airing before Med! It's all part of the epic, three part storyline that executive producer Anastasia Puglisi likened to an epic "action movie."
