One Chicago will not be airing new episodes this week (despite just returning)

The franchise will be relying on 2025 reruns instead.

One Chicago is slowly chipping at its trio of 2024-25 seasons. The franchise has dished out some truly memorable episodes this year, and the promos for the upcoming episodes assure us that there is plenty more to come. Unfortunately, it won't be coming the week of April 6-12.

Chicago Med, Chicago Fire and Chicago PD will not be airing new episodes on Wednesday, April 9. Instead, NBC will be airing reruns of the fifth episode in each of the show's current seasons. It'll yet another instance of the franchise returning from a lengthy hiatus, only to take more time off once it gets its groove back.

The franchise took three weeks off in March, returning at the end of the month with a batch of new episodes. The momentum carried over to the following week, but now, two weeks out from the shows returning, NBC has decided to rely on reruns once again. What gives? Well, unfortunately, this is part of the procedural television game.

Long time One Chicago fans know this stop-and-start scheduling is nothing new. Chicago Med, Fire and PD often dish out episodes in short bursts before taking breaks. Especially toward the end of the season. Why? Well, there are few different reasons. One, NBC wants to make sure they have enough episodes to get to the end of the season. This oftentimes requires breaks and reliance on reruns.

Then there's the production schedule. The cast and crew for each One Chicago show works tirelessly to get episodes done, and sometimes, more time is needed to craft the final few episodes of a given season. Screen Magazine confirmed that all three shows have either just wrapped production or are approaching the end of their production schedules.

The franchise will return on April 16

Chicago Med wrapped up production on March 26, while Chicago PD closed its set doors on April 1. Chicago Fire, however, will continue shooting until April 17. Chicago Fire requires more stunt work and location shoots than its peers, so it makes sense it would be the last one to wrap. All three shows will need time to put together the last few episodes of their respective seasons, and NBC has given them time by turning to reruns this week.

The good news is that fans won't have to wait long for new episodes. Chicago Med, Chicago Fire and Chicago PD will return on Wednesday, April 16, and the promos for these episodes have already been released. They look as though they'll be worth the wait.
