Athena did not die on 911 and no, Angela Bassett isn't leaving (at least not yet)
By Cody Schultz
Fear not my fellow Angela Bassett fans, our queen did not bid farewell to 911 and Athena Grant has lived to fight another day… at least for now! The promos for the second part of the 911 season 7 three-part premiere event saw Athena in a fight for her life and the episode indeed found Athena looking death right in the face, but she lived to fight another day.
The second episode of the season saw pirates taking over the cruise ship in search of the dongle and we were fully prepared for it to take the full episode to fight them off. Instead, Athena, the boss she is, managed to quickly defuse the situation figuring out that cruise director Julian was behind the crime scheme and had been having an affair with Lola and using her as his go-between. Once he handed over the dongle, the pirates left the ship and everyone made it out unscathed… well, almost everyone. Poor Norman took a bullet to the chest and was in need of urgent medical attention. Unfortunately, the cruise ship’s doctor wasn’t of much help but Bobby used his training to help stabilize Norman.
It looked like the worst had passed and then BOOM! Like, literally, there was a large explosion and things quickly went from bad to worse from there. Ever the hero, Athena helped free the ship’s captain with hump from Julian who she then tasked with getting the captain above deck as she took it upon herself to attempt to activate the secondary bilge pump to help keep the ship afloat.
When she made it to the door, it wouldn’t open which was when Bobby showed up to help. While they were able to activate the secondary bilge pump, sparks caught and forced the door to close trapping them in the room as water began filling the room. Just when it looked like Athena and Bobby weren’t going to make it, Julian showed up and helped the pair make it back up to the casino with the few remaining members of the ship and passengers who hadn’t yet made it to a lifeboat.
That’s when things got even worse as a wave from the hurricane caused the ship to flip creating a true Posideon Adventure.
Angela Bassett is not expected to be leaving 911 this season
As the second episode of 911 season 7 came to an end, things weren't exactly looking good for Athena and Bobby after they found themselves trapped in the upside-down ship. We can't say for certain that the pair will make it out as this is TV and we have to always expect the unexpected; however, there have been no reports of Angela Bassett leaving the show.
Seven seasons into the show, Bassett seems to still be loving every minute of being a part of the cast and hasn't announced any plans to leave the show.
"I love the work that I do here. It's very satisfying," Bassett told People when promoting season 7. “But also I hope that what will come out of that is that [my children] see a mama, a woman, a Black woman achieving her dreams, having success. They’ll see that hard work pays off. And they’ll be about that life for themselves.”
Of course, we don't know what the future holds for the show but we're optimistic that Bassett will remain with the show for seasons to come as we can't imagine the show without her!
