We're coming down to the wire on Blue Bloods, so every decision that a character makes will play a role in where they end up in the series finale. The characters that have the most uncertain future, at least in terms of what they mean to each other, are Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg) and Maria Baez (Marisa Ramirez).

There's been some particularly moments between the partners in season 14, and rumors of them striking up a romantic relationship have been brewing for years. If it was ever going to happen, it would be in the final season, right? Well, not quite.

Kevin Wade confirmed Reagan and Baez are only friends

Irish Exits
“Irish Exits” – Frank worries about his longtime friend Lenny Ross (Treat Williams) when he suspects the former officer is hiding his true reason for returning to the city. Also, Danny and Baez investigate when Baez and her daughter are targeted by a criminal Baez once put away; Eddie gives her partner, Badillo, relationship advice when his ex-girlfriend is physically attacked; and Anthony is sucked into the inner workings of an underground crime ring when his chaotic cousin, Joey, begs him for /

Blue Bloods showrunner Kevin Wade recently talked about the duo during an interview with TV Insider, and he made it clear that they will not be dating. His reasoning? It's been done before. Blue Bloods has already pulled the partners-turned-lovers trick with Jamie Reagan (Will Estes) and Eddie Janko (Vanessa Ray), and he feels it would cheapen the show if he simply ran the same trick back:

"We put Jamie and Eddie together a few years ago. I think the show would dip into parody if we had two of our cops marrying two of their partners who are getting into that."

The showrunner sees Reagan as a classic "loner"

Past Is Present
“Past Is Present” – Danny reunites with a troublesome teenager from a past case when the youth finds herself in danger. Also, Frank faces a difficult personnel decision close to home; Jamie grows suspicious when Henry is asked to be interviewed for an investigative Web series; and Erin and Anthony investigate when Erin is the alleged target of a shooting, on BLUE BLOODS, Friday, March 15 (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network, and streaming on Paramount+ (live and on demand for /

Another reason Wade feels the Reagan and Baez romance would fall flat is because it wouldn't line up with the way Reagan has been portrayed historically. "To me, Danny Reagan has been built and played as a loner," he noted. "I know he was married for half of the episodes, but he's almost like the classic private eye who is married to his work and who has the freedom and the latitude to do whatever he wants."

The showrunner admitted that the actors will oftentimes add romantic subtext to their scenes, especially given the dymanic of Reagan and Baez as "work husband" and "work wife," but there will not be any shocking twists in which they embrace and decide to live happily ever after. They work better as partners, which is something Marisa Ramirez has noted in the past.
