Blue Bloods teases Baez-Reagan romance but stars are conflicted
Blue Bloods is not coming back, so the decisions made during the current season will dictate how each of the characters end their arcs. It's sad to see such a beloved show go off the air, but it does give the writers the freedom to tell stories and go places they wouldn't have otherwise.
The potential romance between Maria Baez (Marisa Ramirez) and Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg) is at the top of the list. Fans have been shipping these two since they became partners, but something always kept them from taking the plunge.
In a recent episode, however, things seem to have changed. "Shadowland" saw Baez step out for a drink with someone else, and Reagan was visibly annoyed by the decision.
Donnie Wahlberg teased romance on X
Not only that, but Donnie Wahlberg added fuel to the fire on social media. A fan pointed out that the character seemed miffed by Baez showing interest in someone else, and Wahlberg reposted to the tweet by saying: "He is not pleased." This tweet alone has Blue Bloods fans wondering whether the partners are going to be endgame.
There's a lot of evidence to support this theory, a lot of which has come in season 14. The episode "Dropping Bombs" saw Reagan admit that he's worried about putting the people he loves in danger, and then made direct reference to Baez:
"I don’t want to start a relationship with my partner, because I don’t want anyone that I love to ever be put in danger again."
Marisa Ramirez shot down the romance theory
Wahlberg's decision to tease a romance on social media has excited, but Marisa Ramirez previously shot down the idea of the partners linking up. She told TV Insider in 2023 that she felt their friendship was so valuable that she feared a romance could lead to them being separated by the NYPD:
"I know that fans do want that romance, but I think it’s more fun to just kind of tease whether we can go there or not."
Maybe things have changed, but Ramirez's observation carried weight, so it'll be fascinating to see how the Blue Bloods writers navigate this tricky middle ground between romance and friendship.
