Chicago Fire boss casts doubt on Severide appearing in S12 finale
Here we go again. Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) has been a relatively steady force during the last handful of Chicago Fire episodes, but like we noted in a previous piece, the show has been reluctant to incorporate him into a major dramatic storyline. Most of his season 12 screen time has been spent solving arson cases on the side.
There's nothing wrong with arson cases, and Severide has clearly proven to be a natural when it comes to solving them, but the emotional strife between him and his wife Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) has largely gone unexplored since the first couple episodes of the season. Thankfully, we're going to get something major in episode 1211.
Andrea Newman says Severide has a big upcoming arc
In a recent discussion with TV Line, Chicago Fire showrunner Andrea Newman revealed that the episode in question will test not only Severide's relationship with his wife, but his future on the show as a whole! Here's what Newman had to say:
"If Severide can overcome a terrifying crime in [Episode] 1211 and make it to the finale, there could be a major revelation for Kelly and Stella then. And that is all I’ll say on that!"
Consider us interested! It's about time Severide gets personally involved in a case again. That being said, Newman did introduce the possibility that the character would be taken out of commission as a result of what happens to him in the episode, which would continue the season-long trend of erasing Severide from the most important storylines.
The character will confront a "terrifying crime"
The character's availability has been a mystery all season. He will be gone for an episode, then back, then gone again, then back. The rhyme or reason behind these changes is not very clear, and there hasn't been any explanation provided by Sigan or Taylor Kinney. The latter hasn't spoken about the show since his return.
While the notion of Severide being linked to a "terrifying crime" has us compelled, we really hope the character makes it through his ordeal and sticks around for the season 12 finale. Heck, we want him to stick around for season 13 now that we know it's around the corner.
