Chicago Med boss teases 'new' roles for Goodwin and Crockett

Big things are happening on Chicago Med! The medical drama has parted ways with several notable characters over the last two seasons, but a recent interview with showrunners Andrew Schneider and Diane Frolov confirms that the characters who remain are also subject to change.

Schneider and Frolov discussed the upcoming ninth season with Deadline, and revealed that there are going to be "new" roles and different sides of veteran characters being explored. The two that were specifically mentioned were Dr. Sharon Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson) and Crockett Marcel (Dominic Rains), who have been part of Med since its inception.

Dr. Goodwin will bump heads with the board in season 9

In the case of Goodwin, Schneider stated that the character will have to contend with new ownership at Gaffney Medical Center, and deal with the desire to profit from patients, rather than put their health as the central focus. It's a plot point that was central to season 8, but season 9 will offer a more refined, and sometimes more complicated take:

""The board wants to turn this into a profit-making enterprise but that will be a source of some conflict for Goodwin and the doctors. But we don’t deal with that in the premiere episode. All we learn is that they have new owners and that they are business people.""

Goodwin, who has also had to contend with health problems in recent seasons, will be tasked with fighting the good fight while protecting her staff members from the money-first outlook of the board. That being said, she will be able to protect Crockett Marcel, as he will reportedly be asked to join the board.

Crockett will actually become a member of the board

Diane Frolov confirmed that Crockett will be getting a promotion in season 9, and that his new duty as part of the board will complicate his generally straightforward approach to treating patients:

""We’ll see that Crockett is asked to join the new board. And that is something that boards do, have a physician representing the doctors. So he will be involved a little bit more with what’s going on with the administration... He will become a little bit of a different character. It’s a new role for him.""

It makes sense to retool these long-standing characters, especially as Chicago Med approaches a decade of being on the air, and it will allow for some unexpected developments with regards to how these two interact with the rest of the staff.

It'll be fun to see who comes down on what side as the battle for Gaffney Medical Center rages on.
