Chicago Med star addresses possible Ripley and Asher romance
Romance has been difficult to come by on Chicago Med. The ninth season has been punctuated by relationships that don't work out, like that of Maggie Lockwood (Marlyne Barrett), or ones that seem on the cusp of falling apart, like that of Dr. Sharon Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson).
There is, however, a relationship that does have some romantic potential, and it's between Hannah Asher (Jessy Schram) and one of the show's newcomers, Dr. Mitch Ripley (Luke Mitchell). The two haven't seen eye-to-eye on everything in the workplace, but it's hard to deny that there's some connection that grows stronger with each episode.
The characters' fate remains unclear to the cast
This connection is not lost on Mitchell, who recently talked to CinemaBlend about the burgeoning relationship, and whether it will come to fruition. The actor made it clear that he didn't know the exact outcome of the Asher and Mitchell dynamic, saying, he's "curious to know what the writers' intentions are for these characters," but is enjoying the journey:
"Whether these two end up getting together or not, I think it's a really interesting dynamic. They're just starting to plant seeds."
Ripley's dynamic with Dr. Charles (Oliver Platt) may have been made clear, but the character's feelings towards Asher have been presented much more nebulously, to the point where we still aren't sure where things are going.
Asher, of course, has had some complicated relationships with her male coworkers over the years. She dated Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss), the man that Mitchell has effectively replaced within the Gaffney system, and she's still in the midst of an unspoken, pseudo flirtatious dynamic with Dean Archer (Steven Weber).
Romance is still a strong possibility
Given that we are more familiar with Asher as viewers, it'll be interesting to see how she navigates the idea of dating someone in the workplace again, and whether she will rule it out entirely on the basis of her experiences.
Mitchell told the outlet that wherever the relationship goes between the two characters, he's thrilled to be working with Asher and feels as though his performance continues to improve and evolve next to hers:
"It's just been really nice to just come in and do my thing, and get each script as it comes in and see these characters start to interact and to maybe bond a little bit."
It's too early to tell what the Chicago Med writers have in mind, but they've done a good job of piquing our interest so far, so we're confident they'll be able to stick the landing.
