Chicago PD showrunner teases new romance for Atwater in season 12
By Cody Schultz
Could love finally be in the air for Atwater? It seems it just might be!
As we gear up for a new season of Chicago PD, showrunner Gwen Sigan is giving Atwater fans something to look forward to with the tease that season 12 might finally give him a new romantic storyline.
“Atwater might get a little romance this season [with] somebody who can see him and can understand who he is,” Sigan revealed to TVLine.
It’s the latter part of that tease that honestly has us most excited as Atwater’s last romance saw him hiding major pieces of his life including his career which proved to be the downfall of the relationship which was built on lies due to his omission of truth. While it was an interesting and timely story to tell, we’re ready to see Atwater get the chance to be in a happy relationship where he can be himself and not have to worry about hiding who he really is.
Outside of teasing that Atwater will be getting a new romantic storyline this season, little was teased of Atwater’s new love interest but we know she would be found in the Intelligence Unit’s newest addition.
Sigan has confirmed that they’re not planning on making Officer Kiana Cook a love interest for Atwater, at least “not off the bat.” In other words, while they might explore that dynamic in the future and don’t want to rule it out entirely, this isn’t a storyline they’re planning on exploring in season 12 and we’re going to be meeting another character who will be introduced as a love interest.
No casting announcements have been made just yet hinting at who Atwater’s new love interest might but, but we have a feeling we should get to meet her sometime in the early part of the season given the tease Sigan gave.
All we know is that we hope that Atwater's new relationship gets a bit more screentime and lasts longer than his previous relationship, as we're tired of Atwater's storylines often being put on the back burner on the show.
Chicago PD season 12 premieres Wednesday, Sept. 25 at 10/9c on NBC!
