Could a SWAT wedding be coming in season 8? (SWAT boss weighs in!)
By Cody Schultz
When SWAT wrote off former series regular Alex Russell in what was originally supposed to be the show’s final season, the show gave fans a fun Easter egg when revealing that his character had gotten engaged to Christina “Chris” Alonso. At the end of his farewell episode, Street told Tan that he and Chris would have him over in a few weeks for their engagement party telling him to “Just don’t say anything yet, especially to Chris.”
The moment was a fun Easter egg for longtime fans who had hoped to see Street and Chris get their happy ending on-screen, but never got the chance due to Lina Esco’s departure as Chris prior to Russell’s own departure in season 7. It meant that the pair were not only still together, but planning for a life together and was likely designed as a fun nod for fans as part of Russell’s exit.
However, now that the show is coming back for another season, it seems the door is open for a Street and Chris wedding to happen on the show.
“You know, I would love to [do a wedding],” S.W.A.T. showrunner Andrew Dettman told TVLine in a recent interview. “In our minds, Street and Chris are still very much part of the SWAT family.”
But given the two characters are no longer a part of the show’s core cast, should fans be worried that the wedding will happen off-screen? Fortunately, that is something not being discussed as Dettman has assured fans that he would not have their wedding take place off-screen, hinting that the door remains open for the two characters to potentially return down the line.
Chris and Street aren’t set to return for SWAT season 8, but the door is open
At this moment, there have been no hints that Lina Esco or Alex Russell will be returning as part of the SWAT season 8 cast; however, there is always a chance that the pair could come back for a guest spot on the show.
As showrunner Andrew Dettman told TVLine, “The door is open to all of the characters form the past [to return in some capacity], because I think the audience would love that and we would love that. The door is open for Luca (played by Kenny Johnson until mid-Season 7) or Street or Chris to somehow work back into some episodes. I would be thrilled about that.”
Given Russell’s exit from the show only just came in season 7, while Esco hasn’t appeared on the show since her exit in season 5, the odds of seeing the two characters both return in season 8 seem slim. Still, we can hold out hope that perhaps the stars will align and the pair might choose to return for a potential SWAT wedding.
In the meantime, it seems fans can at least find peace in knowing that Street and Chris as very much still together within the world of the show and that the engagement tease was intended to open the door for their potential return for a wedding.
SWAT season 8 premieres Friday, Oct. 18 at 8/7c on CBS!
