Donnie Wahlberg hints at Blue Bloods future in heartfelt concert speech
Donnie Wahlberg loves Blue Bloods. We know it, he knows it, it's a fact of life. He has been one of the most ardent supporters of the show since day one, and his documentation of the show's final season has been a treat for fans. Albeit, a bittersweet one.
Wahlberg has made it clear that he's going to miss playing Danny Reagan on the long-running police drama. He's going to miss it so much, in fact, that he took time out from his other job to wax poetic on the Reagan character's possible future.
Donnie Wahlberg is hopeful for more Blue Bloods
That's right: Donnie Wahlberg stopped a New Kids on the Block show to discuss what could come next in the Blue Bloods franchise. The crossover we never thought we'd get, or realized we needed. The whole thing came about when a fan asked Wahlberg whether CBS could still bring the show back for another season.
The actor/singer was pretty steadfast in noting that he just completed production on the final season. "Well, we filmed the apparent last season of Blue Bloods, and it’ll air starting in October," he explained. It was the statement that followed, though, that gave fans hope:
"Maybe there’ll be something else after that. I don’t know anything officially yet, but there’s things in the works. So maybe something awesome will happen."
CBS has announced future spinoff plans
While statements don't come more vague, something being in the works is better than nothing. CBS execs have already noted that they plan to extend the Blue Bloods franchise in the future, and want to ensure they don't rush anything. It's unclear whether a spinoff would focus on the Reagan family, or a different police dynasty.
That being said, given Donnie Wahlberg's passion, it would be great to see him get involved with whatever the network decides to do with the franchise. He's obviously game, and seeing Danny Reagan in a different environment would be, at the worst, pretty novel.
