Grey's Anatomy is still going strong. Despite being forced to acclimate to a reduced season due to the actors and writers strikes, the medical drama has been renewed for another season by ABC. The renewal ensures that the show will be back for the 2024-25 season, and will represent something of a new chapter.

Shonda Rhimes was the creator and showrunner of Grey's Anatomy for the first 19 seasons, but the duties of the latter role have since been passed on to Meg Marinis. The ABC renewal marks the first time that more episodes have ordered under Marinis' tenure, and it's something Rhimes is hopeful about, according to the statement she issued to the Hollywood Reporter:

"Meg Marinis’ storytelling is a gift that continues to keep the show vibrant, compelling and alive, and I can’t wait to see what she has in store for next season."

There are no plot details regarding season 21, or information on whether Ellen Pompeo's titular character will return after making a handful of appearances in season 20. Regardless of where it goes, however, Grey's Anatomy will continue to make history.

It became the longest-running medical drama of all time in 2019, snatching the crown from ER and showing no signs of slowing down in the process. Marinis has not yet commented on the renewal, but she did discuss how important the legacy of the show is to her during a recent interview with Glamour Magazine.

She notes that she has been a part of the show in a professional sense since the third season, and strives to maintain consistency and quality when it comes to the stories that the show embarks on in the 2020s:

"I know what we've done. I know what we haven't done. I put in a lot of Easter eggs into things that sometimes even the cast and crew don't recognize. But I'm constantly honoring the history of the show."

Deadline did report that the contracts for most of the main cast members are up after season 20, so the show will have to go through the process of renewing them and determining which members they want to bring back. This will allegedly be the next step in NBC's season 21 rollout.
