Herrmann didn't take the captain's exam for the most realistic reason in Chicago Fire

Herrmann didn’t take the captain's test when it came up prior to the Chicago Fire season 13 premiere. In the second episode, he admitted to the reason why, and it was so adorably realistic.

It didn’t take long for us to learn the truth about Herrmann. He felt awful for lying to Mouch, and he needed to get that off his chest. This opened up a great dialogue, and it also gave the two men a chance to be honest with each other at the end of the episode as well.

Herrmann didn’t feel worthy in Chicago Fire

When we all learned that Eamonn Walker was leaving Chicago Fire, we all had concerns about who would become Chief of 51. Of course, the writers knew we all had our concerns. It would be hard for someone to come in and sit in that chair (and be liked!). So, making it clear that Boden wanted Herrmann to be his successor was perfect.

But of course, Herrmann would know how big those boots were to fill. It had taken him long enough to take the lieutenant's exam, so it’s only natural that it would take him a while to get the courage to take the captain's exam. That’s especially as the pressure was on for him to take Boden’s place.

I think we all can understand this feeling. We all know that Herrmann is capable, but it’s only natural for him to feel unworthy or incapable. Boden was such an amazing Chief.

Mouch is willing to push Herrmann to greatness

Well, Mouch isn’t going to let his friend wallow in fear. He made it clear that Boden was the one to pick Herrmann for this. If Boden didn’t think Herrmann could do it, there is no way that he would have suggested it. Boden knew every member of Firehouse 51 well enough to know what they’re capable of.

This is the push that Herrmann needed, but he then spent the episode running around looking for a scent for Cindy. It led to a moment at the end of the episode that was just beautifully done. Mouch wants to be a promotion, but he clearly doesn’t want to leave Firehouse 51. So, to take the lieutenant's exam, he needs to know that Herrmann will take the captain's exam. He needs to know that the lieutenant spot on Engine 81 will open up.

Herrmann is over the hump now. He listened to Mouch and believed him. So, it looks like we’ll be seeing some changes soon. I'll admit that I'm enjoying seeing some of the shake-up with Pascal around, but I'll be happy to see Herrmann in that chair.
