After taking a week off, Chicago Fire is back. We’ve known since the break started that Brett’s career and freedom were about to be put on the line.

The promo made it clear that we would have a break. It also made it clear that it was only a week off from our favorite One Chicago shows. That break was well-timed with Valentine’s Day, so it wasn’t surprising to see the break happen.

The episode sees Firehouse 51 called out to an incident in what looks to be a gym. The defibrillator is needed, but it malfunctions. It’s not exactly clear what happens to the patient, but this is something that everyone needs to look into.

Boden warns Brett that it could have been user error. That means Brett’s career is on the line. If it turns out she did something wrong when using it, she could end up losing her job and even potentially charged. If it ends up being a machine issue, then she’s off the hook.

Of course, there is more to the story than what the promo shows. We’ll also learn more about Gibson’s past. This is a man who has kept himself to himself for a lot of the episodes he’s been in. He’s proven to be a good firefighter, but he doesn’t want to go into his past. Why? Has he got something to hide, or does he just want a fresh start?

Check out the promo and synopsis for Chicago Fire season 12, episode 5:

"After their defibrillator malfunctions on a call, Brett and Violet search for answers; Herrmann tries to find the perfect home for his new recliner; a secret from Gibson's past comes to light."
