"Survival" ended with Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) deciding to hide Noah at his home, instead of returning him to his seemingly abusive family. The storyline for "The Living and the Dead" implies that the case gets deeper and exceedingly more complicated for the veteran cop, in addition to having to navigate an entirely new case involving a serial killer.

The synopsis reads as follows:

"An ongoing case hits close to home for Voight as Intelligence teams up with an SVU detective to track down a prolific offender."
